what kind of pick? why?

Re: what kind of pick? why?

I've only been using one kind of pick for the past year or two: Dunlop Ultex 1.14mms. They never break, sound great and the thickness allows me to really lay in on the strings and get a beefier sound.

Re: what kind of pick? why?

I used 1.0mm sharkfins for years, but like my string guage, changed about a year ago. I now use .73 Dunlop Ultex picks.

Re: what kind of pick? why?

Dunlop Gator Grip .96..

- they aren't 'clicky'
- they are easily found anywhere
- they are cheap
- they are purple
- they have a cute smiley gator on them

Re: what kind of pick? why?

Dunlop Adamas 2mm graphite picks. Once I tried those, there was no going back to the Tortex ones...or anything else.

Re: what kind of pick? why?

1.0 blue Everly Brothers star pick. It is made by Dunlop....tortex with a star shaped hole in the middle for a good grip.

Re: what kind of pick? why?

I got to say that after today's playing my first choice will be Fender Medium , it's standard and simple and gives me clarity and definition(with more high end, sometimes icepicky sound) that none of my dunlop picks can give. I think i'll stick with Fender since today.

Re: what kind of pick? why?

Dunlop Gator 2mm. Been using them for about 4 or 5 years now. I used to use Dunlop Tortex 1.14mm bit I switched to the gators because I like the grip they make me use and the lack of scraping from the sharp edge of the thinner pick.

Re: what kind of pick? why?

I haven't read the whole thread, but I have been using the Dunlop Delrin 1.5 mm picks for 15 years now (oddly, its the same pick Yngwie uses). I really like the grip in the tortex, but the attack sounds different - I would like a Delrin with the Tortex grip to it.

Re: what kind of pick? why?

gator grip 1.5mm, i cant have a pick that bends.

the grip actually makes a diference cause i sweat like a pig when im playing.

Re: what kind of pick? why?

iv been using the Dunlop Tortex (blue)
or clayton angel picks (medium I think)
sometimes I pick up some fender jazz picks (heavy)
gorilla snot works great with getting a grip

Re: what kind of pick? why?

blue Dunlop 1.0 mm
purple Dunlop 1.14 mm

They both have a nice grip to them, they respond well to slides, and they last quite a while.

Re: what kind of pick? why?

Dunlop Jazz III and NOTHING ELSE!

It works the best for me. It's small and helps me pick fast. bigger picks seem to slow me down since I've started using them!

Re: what kind of pick? why?

Dunlop

Tortex .88-1.14
Gator Grip 1.14-2.0

I used the orange tortex (.60) for years, but then i decided to try a heavier pick.

i havent looked back since.

Heavier picks have less flex obviously, which makes them more precise.

pinch harmonics are easier with thicker picks IMO.

they just feel better to me.

Re: what kind of pick? why?

On my acustic, i have really heavy/fat strings ( 14/15's) so i use .60 picks to get a very fat sound ( think bowies star man ) and with my electric, i have 11 gauge, so i go up to 70's 88's

Re: what kind of pick? why?

I used to use dunlop nylon and tortex picks, but now I swear by my stainless steel pick. It's fairly thick too. I like the tone of I get out of metal picks. It gives your tone a bit more presence and makes it sound fatter, with a slight percussive type attack. Once you get used to the metal pick and know how to relax your fingers to simulate a plastic pick "flexing" and then tighting your fingers to dig into the strings harder, then you'll never go back to a normal pick. The tone from a plastic or nylon pick just seems lacking after getting used to a metal pick.

Re: what kind of pick? why?

I used to use Dunlop .88mm (green) but i have recently switched to the .88mm Tortex 'Wedge' picks. They are more or less the same as the standard tortex shape with the exception of a slightly more pointed, sharper tip. I find i can be more precise with those.

Re: what kind of pick? why?

.60 Dunlop Tortex... The orange ones.... :) They are perfect to me... Not to thick and not to thin. :)
