yeah, it's as unfortunately named as the 'jazz' ...
no first hand experience, here ... but i've read posts from guys who've used it describing that it is pretty articulate, even under gain ...
i hope some of these guys will be along to give first hand reports

I thought it was a fantastic pickup just has the wrong name. It's a good bit lower in output than the JB/Distortion/Custom but it's a bit sweeter sounding. It's got like a vintage vibe but with a modern twist....it's just like the description says actually...open sounding with crisp but not harsh highs and growl in the lower mids.
I thought it was pretty darn good....it seemed kind of like a HI-FI PAF

I think of it as a 59B wound a little hotter. I sell it alot to guys who want a pickup hotter than the 59B but not as hot as the Customs, JB, etc. The SD is a great pickup for all styles: Blues, Rock...whatever. I think it has a cool name and I think the SD can scream with the best of them. Heck, the 59B can scream too.
Doesn't take a 16K pickup to get a screamin' tone...Roy Buchanan could do it with a low output Tele.

That is pretty much it. It is not really a rhythm pick up, great for leads, unwound strings can tend to be a little shrill. That is fixed by switching out the hex poles for flatheads.-->Think of it as "the P-90 of humbuckers" underhigh gain. Lots of mids, lots of growl.

What about the Lil' Screamin' Demon? How well would it go with either 2 SSL-1's or APS-1?. Anyone use this Lil' SD for bluesy classic rock stuff? what about it split with the middle pup notch position? Does it have any quack?

The Screamin' Demon is my favourite Duncan pup!
I have tons of first hand experience with this pickup.
Clean, the tone is shimmery and bright, very tight, with just a touch of lower midrange growl to it.
Distorted, it's clean without being compressed, has lots of definition and great high frequency response.
I've used my Demon-equipped guitars going right into a high gain head, with and without an overdrive pedal. The additional OD adds some nice harmonics to the tone, fattens it up a bit, and adds to the sustain, of course.
Going direct into a amp modeler (I have the Korg PXR4 as well as the Roland VG88), you can really saturate the gain before you get into total distortion, but that's what I like about this pup ... it translates the tone of your guitar/fingers with virtually no editorializing, and keeps its cool even while being pushed hard.

When I had my Strat, the guitar had just a Demon, wired series/split, parrallel. I didn't reall like the split tone. Some may like it, I just didn't. It was kind of thin and airy- light sounding. Maybe Y2stevo will chime in, he's got it now. I like a split hum to sound as close to a Strat or Tele single as possible. I'm kind of a traditionalist, that's just me.
