What kind of resistor to bring down a pickups output a bit

I just picked up a Screamin Demon off Matt and I'm planning on dropping in the neck slot of my project. I know a resistor would be the trick to drop it down a couple notches to about 8k but I have no idea what kind or size to get.

Re: What kind of resistor to bring down a pickups output a bit

How about just running the pickup in parallel?

I probably try that if the reisistor thing doesn't work out well. I'm afraid running it in parallel might drop the output too much though.

Re: What kind of resistor to bring down a pickups output a bit

How about putting the old aligator clips to work, put a pot accross the input, and turn it down to the sound you are looking for?

Then multimeter the pot resistance and you will know, exactly the amount of resistance you need for the sound you are looking for, not one that we might think makes sense.
Cheers

Re: What kind of resistor to bring down a pickups output a bit

you can simulate a vol pot on seven or somethin like this ...

Maybe:
pup's hot -> 100k-1M -> wire to to vol selector/pot -> 1M -> Ground
could work.. it would suck 6db with both 1M and 400k load!
maybe different values...

or just put a 500K (or less I think) between the hot wire and the switch...
this would be like a 1M lin (!) pot at 5

maybe put a variable resistor or another pot in the circuit tweak it to pleasure and measure the value -> take resistor of the newest value

maybe set the pup just lower

Why not a Jazz neck or a Jazz bridge? It would give you exactly what you want...

Before you do any potentially unnecessary mods, you could just install as normal and adjust the pickup height to get the volume you want. Heck, you may like it better with stock wiring anyway. Just a suggestion. :)

Re: What kind of resistor to bring down a pickups output a bit

Thanks for all the replies guys! My first course of action is of course wire it in stock. I've done this before w/ a demon and it turned out great. The only difference is this guitar is solid maple so I'm trying to get my options lined out before everything goes in!

If things don't work as well, then I will probably wire a trim pot inbetween the pickup. That way I'll have lots of time to play it and dial it in properly.

If that doesn't work out then I'll do some modding to the pickup trying different mags and what not.

Let's make sure we understand you -- do you want just the VOLUME of an 8k pickup or the TONE?

If you want the TONE of an 8k pickup, just finding a way to cut the volume on it won't do the trick because it won't raise the resonant peak. For this I recommend the Spin-A-Split mod. If you just want it a little quieter, you already have a volume pot for that. But if you want it quieter relative to the other pickups, then just a separate volume pot will do the trick.

OK! I see what you're saying now. Sorry it's been a long day. I'm possibly wanting to bring the resonant peak down on the pickup.

I just got off the phone w/ um...yeah... and they are suggesting hooking up a Qfilter to a trim pot in the control cavity since I don't have room for another tone pot and I find push/pulls to be a PITA.

Re: What kind of resistor to bring down a pickups output a bit

Zhangliqun-glad you jumped in here- i thought we were going for pup vol balancing- as you said, spin a split is great way to get varible tones-

9 finger- Ive heard lots of good things aboout teh q filter and would appreciate a review if you go that route-
cheers
