That's alder. No production Kramers were made of basswood.

Hehe many opinions on this.. Niels says Alder og poplar... Hmmm, what to do, to be sure?

Re: What kind of wood is my Kramer made out of?

There were some that were maple but not as many as some folks think. What year is yours, Axl?

You could always do a dent test, haha.

Don't worry about it and rock that chiz.

Mine is an 1987, late one. Floyd is recessed.

It is pretty heavy, and doesn't dent easily. :)

Neckplate says F 9790 so it is one of the last ones :)

Late '87, which means pointy headstock. It's alder. They did make some with maple and ash starting in the mid-80's but like I said, there weren't as many as people thing. My Baretta is alder and a pretty solid and hefty 8 lbs. I thought it was maple but upon further inspection, it is not.

Ahh ok, its weird though, according to litterature from late '87, its made from poplar.

It sounds different from any other Alder strat I have ever had. Much thicker, and mids kinda like a Les Paul, which combined with the JB makes the mids too compressed almost.

You still think the SD is the ticket?

Re: What kind of wood is my Kramer made out of?

Sounds like how my Baretta sounds. It's an '88 model. Probably made in '87 but finished and painted in '88. The JB rocks in it.

Gotta remember that there's a Floyd Rose there, not a traditional Strat bridge, and a locking nut. Not to mention that the body shape is a bit different too.

Can't trust a lot of Kramer info online, even from the site posted. Poplar and alder are very similar tonewise so it's really a wash there, IMO.

Can't hurt to try the SD.

I know it's not mahogany...but damn if it doesn't "look" like mahogany.

I have a late 80's Striker that's made out of plywood!! Heavy as hell.
Put a Distortion bridge and Hot Rails neck. Sha-weeet.
