What makes a good 4x12?

Re: What makes a good 4x12?

Though in serious danger of further cementing my reputation as a Splawn fanboy, I can't recommend their cabs highly enough.

They're basically the exact same construction as the Bogner Uber cabs, with your choice of speakers (either Celestions or Eminence Redcoats). They sound fantastic, have a great wide projection, and despite my best efforts I haven't managed to push it into "bad sounding" territory via excessive volume. Heavy suckers, though.

ply is great for strength, focus, and stability but solid woods tend to enhance the tone more. pine has a low and high resonance when ya tap it and i love it for combos. besides solid woods look better and like d1 said, best cab he ever heard was wood (mahogany) not ply.

ive never tried one before but its coming out nice. no pics as i dont really have a camera but once its done ill try and track one down. as always i have loads of projects going on but i should have it done in a few weeks.

Why do you not want to sound like a fanboy? sounds like they are all that AND a basket of fries..

Redcoats good? I was gonna get a Jensen Neo for my PV special 30 by the guy from usspeaker suggested a Redcoat..

Things that affect sound in a speaker cab
1 - Shape
2 - Construction
3 - Wood
4 - Speakers

So you have four variables of which the easiest to change/control is the speakers.
Guitar cab design is, to a certain extent, a black art.

And money will not always solve the problem. You could spend two thousand dollars on the amp, a thousand on the cab and the combination won't work and you may as well have only spent $500, or you may spend a thousand on both and have the best sound ever. But, like pickups, you need to try and test until you get that combo right, the benifit with cabs is you don't have to get the iron out to do the changes.

Hey Fanboi, Scott's got a new custom eminence speaker.

The cab I just ordered is a 2x12 loaded with these bad boys. Scott says it's the best speaker he's heard yet for a Splawn. From on fanboy to another, go ahead and drool brother:
