Re: What makes a guitar sound 80s?
I'd have said chorus. Lots and lots of chorus.

Just learn the easy stuff from VH1 (har har) like "You Really Got Me" and "Jamie's Cryin" and all the favorites. Those riffs are pretty fun to play and they have that playful energy of the 80s that you are looking for. Ultimate-Guitar.com has a buncha tab written on Van Halen, that oughta loosen the gears.
VH1 is from '78, and VHII is from '79
the playing is definitely 80s though, ya kno?:bling:

I had a kramer focus 6000 with the floyd rose and Jcm800 Marshall. It was very midrange. thing is, it cut thru the mix with no problem. playing it loud by itself if you were close to the half stack it would give you a wicked headache or make you def for a day or two. REO Speedwagen is not my favorite band but they have a song called "roll with the changes". If you listen to that song especially the end chorus (lasts like 3 minutes it seems) you can distinctly hear the midrange guitar chords cutting thru all the other mass junk on the mix. Its like a buzz saw and it is very distinct. I was surprised after I heard the song on the radio at how well it cut right thru. I dont think the guy in that band played a kramer but my kramer focus 6000 with my marshall jcm 800 half stack seemed to cut thru like that. Now I prefere a tone more similer to that midrange attack over the low buzzy tone that seems to get lost in the mix and leaves me cranking the treb in my car to find the guitar player again.
