Ive heard this before and remember them being pretty heavily used when everyone started going to the massive racks.. What does this effect do? Are they still made?

128 patches...has its own sound....
Very compressed...made a lot of hiss when running in hot patches....
Never liked it much!
Racks are both a sonic revelation, and god d amn plauge....lol

It is a preamp . (to get your distortion)
Team it up with your favorite power amp and effect processor.

Not my rack.

LOL!! Yeah,I remember seeing those guys with like 3 of the big racks chock full of processers.. mercy..

You guys remember Rand-o-monium?? He uses a Chameleon (I think) and he has a couple of patches set up and can cover ALOT of ground with them..

Re: What makes a guitar sound 80s?

Old amps...not the bloody JCM800s.....most of us did not even like them back then...thought they where second rate Marshalls...until the usual hype caught up..

I remember reading an interview with Mick Mars in some guitar magazine, probably in the early 90's. It was a reprint of a much older article, IIRC. He said something like, "I've got a couple of the rocker-switch Marshalls, and they stink."

Hmm.

Re: What makes a guitar sound 80s?

Haha! Yeah, Rid hit it on the head. The real players from the 80's used old JMP heads and even older Super Leads. A lot of the 800's didn't start seeing heavy popular band use until the late 80's and by then massive rack systems were in style.

I'm so glad I never fell in to that rack stuff. I've owned 2 pieces of rack gear ever, one was the Rocktron Intellifex LTD and the other, which I still have, is a DOD graphic EQ that I use with our PA system to ring out the monitors.

On a lot of the stuff, especially by the late 80's when it was getting out of hand, the heavy chorus use can be attributed to the producer's putting it on there. Records were recorded totally dry, and then the effects added later. Most of those bands didn't play with chorus live before the big record execs got a hold of them.

I personally don't see anything wrong with chorus or delay when it's added in without going overboard, and there was plenty of overboard back then.

yeah, all about the excess...

True.. By the late 80's the labels were all about Syrup. Power ballads and over done goo. I liked it when it was still gutter glam. More leather than spandex. Before bloated ozzie was wearing makeup and pretty hair.. Looks that kill over Home sweet home

Yes, but Home Sweet Home lifted up more shirts than Looks That Kill, by a long shot. ;)

As much of a hoot that would be, between the wife and 3 of the daughters, Id be going to the doctor for Marshall Hemmorhoids..

I say tell the kids that daddy's put up with their music long enough and he needs his "me" time to stay sane.

Re: What makes a guitar sound 80s?

Oh YEAH!!! I just got done blasting this beastie thru Mr Marshall! Its been a very long time since Ive had this axe plugged up. She was in tune and ready to slay. I cranked up the amp as much as I could in the bedroom and man oh man! They sounded like they were made for each other! Just right, and yeah, I can see this carving right thru.
I dialed in alittle delay and kicked on the ts9 and I could feel the hair starting to grow. Thank god I cant find my spandex pants, that wouldnt be pretty for my kids to see me like that.. haahhahah
it cuts right thru. its midrange galore but in a band you need to cut thru. I think the low buzzy amps sound great by themselves but they get lost in the mix in a hurry in a band it seems. on the radio the buzzy guitar sound seems to disapear wile the midrange el34 tube sound seems to stand out. Have you noticed the newer expensive "botique" amps that use 6L6 tubes are all going to a more midrange voiced sound? I think people are wiseing up. Despite the stupid hair and spandex some of those 80's guys really new what they were doing.
