What neck pup?

What would make a god companion to the duncan dist. for the neck position. I am looking for a nice full meaty articulate sound and I am not too familiar with what the different model duncans sound like. heres a few i am considering
1. Jazz
2. JB
3. Alnico Pro 2
4. 59

please tell me the pros and cons of these pups and what tonal characteristics they possess.
thanks

Re: What neck pup?

For "full meaty and articulate", another Distortion would be cool. That would give you the Mayhem set. My friend has that set in a Schecter Omen 6. Killer sound.

Re: What neck pup?

It'll match up pretty well, actually. You'll need to tweak the heights relative to each other, but it's a rockin' combo in a Lester.

Re: What neck pup?

A2P, PG, 59 will all go with a DD. I'm currently using an old T-Top (close to an A2P). I agree on the PG. LP's should all just come with a PG in the neck!

Re: What neck pup?

I haven't run any of those, except the Jazz, against a Distortion. I would say the Jazz neck sounds quite articulate to me. I also believe the Jazz pairs nicely with my Custom for classic rock up through old school metal. I do tend to use the neck pup on my "hot" combos for blending in with the bridge or really bringing it down a notch when going neck only.

In my LP the Jazz has taken a bit of tweaking against my Distortion. I've got the screw poles raised up quite a bit at this point. I still don't know if I'm 100% satisfied with the Jazz/Distortion but have waffled on what to try instead. Let us know if the PG works well for you! I may convert.

Slight hijack - I'm also planning to turn my 496r/500t Gibson LP Classic into a vintage sounding Paula. I've got some '59s on the way. If the '59n is sounding promising, I'll let you know. I'm not overly optimistic though as I'm expecting it to sound like a little lower output Jazz.

The '59 is warmer than the Jazz (and it can be a bit muddy at times). The Jazz is brighter and a little more articulate. Both are great neck pups.

Re: What neck pup?

Besides being full and meaty, you are right.:laugh2: :laugh2:

A Distortion neck there Hellrider.

Oh yeah, wise guy? :)

The good Rev. Willy G. threw down a pretty meaty solo on "Cheap Sunglasses" using a PGn.

Besides, out of all the Duncan neck PAF-a-likes, the PG is the mutt's nuts on a Lester and you know it.

I had the Seymourizer II (Distortion neck) paired with a Custom bridge in my Bullet. I found the SII bassy and a bit muddy in that application. That's how I originally ended up on the Jazz neck program for hot bridges. BTW, I consider the Distortion in my Paula to be a little brighter than my Custom. But hey, the Bullet wasn't a Paula either so I can't vouch for how a DD neck will sound for yours! :?:

It depends on what you want. I've tried the Jazz and the '59, and the '59 is more meaty than the jazz, and less bright. Both those pickups should be plenty articulate. As for the Alnico 2 Pro, I'm not sure, but check Slash's tone for how that sounds (intro to Sweet Child of Mine, supposedly that's neck pickup).
