What order would YOU put these pedals in? Looking for some feedback

TwilightOdyssey

Darkness on the edge of Tone
I am putting together a new rehearsal/jamming pedal board and am looking to maximize the flexibility of what I have. I have a thought on what order I think will work, but sometimes changing things up yields some great results!

REQUIREMENTS:
1. 'clean' tone (edge of breakup) with chorus
2. overdriven tone (saturated for good crunch at Unity Gain with the clean tone)
3. crunch/lead tone with delay (next level of saturation for metally bits and solos)

AMP
My main amps are all single channel and take pedals well
No fx loops
All capable of achieving edge of breakup tone

PEDALS
1776 Multiplex echo (delay/echo; 3 modes: EP3, Echorech, Space Echo)
Bogner Harlow (compression, boost, transformer colouration)
Bogner Uberschall (overdrive/distortion
strymon DECO (deck 1= tape saturation/compression; deck 2= chorus/flange)
I also have a Road Rage Rapid Fire two-loop pedal

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Interesting. I have it Harlow : Uberschall : DECO : Multiplex

:)

Well, it turns out that that combination sounds terrible together lol. Looked good on paper, but not so much in real life!
I swapped out the Uberschall for the Naga Viper and the tone got way closer to something that I like ... I guess I am simply not an overdrive/distortion pedal guy; I love boosts way too much.

So my next experiment will be to try the Tommy Bolin fuzz for my break up tone, and then slam it with the Naga.

Whatever you do, keep the delay at the end, otherwise it'll sound like "Detachable Pen1s."

That comes in handy a lot of the time. I can leave it at home when I think it's gonna get me in trouble.

I think the problem I am having with the Uberschall is that, though it's a brilliant pedal, I feel like I have to write for or into the pedal. It's not something I can casually add to my board as a generic drive pedal. I just recorded an album using it and it worked really well for that material, but it's way too much for anything else I do.

I am going to look into stacking pedals to push the amp's natural tone to where I want instead of using a high gain pedal. So much for keeping it simple!

The Multiplex sounds great in the fx loop, but it's too messy in front of the pushed amp.

Lastly, the Harlow is brilliant. The DECO is brilliant. Together they are far less than brilliant. I think that the Harlow is better if you are using an overdrive (like the Uberschall) and nothing else. If forced to choose, the DECO is just all round better for what I am doing (NEVER thought I would prefer a digital pedal to analogue).

The only issue with the DECO is that it does so many things that it can reside anywhere on the board! I am really looking forward to when strymon releases their drive pedal so I can go with two pedals and use the Favorite preset for quick-switching.

TL;DR ::

With all THAT being said, my new thought process is:

Horus or Tommy Bolin fuzz (light gain) : MXR phase or flange (modulation) : Naga Viper or Thundertomate (drive boost) : DECO (tape compression/tape delay)

Re: What order would YOU put these pedals in? Looking for some feedback

Since you have a reasonably-small effect chain, it makes experimentation easier. I just read an article from Twitter which explained how to use your effects to get ambient guitar sounds. I haven't tried this yet, but they said the 1st step is this:

Take your effect chain, arrange it in a conventional order (like you have) and then completely reverse it.

I haven't spent much time my guitar lately, but I need to try this.

I have a big board but it doesn't work on 99% of all NYC stages if you don't want to be glued to one spot.

Naga Viper > Fuzz > Deco > MXR Phase
