What pedal do you use for late 80s metal?

I've been working on a new board and want a distortion pedal to sit between my ARC Klone and Afro Fuzz. Strongly considering a Wampler Pinnacle, but the Plextortion and Suhr Riot have me intrigued. What are you guys using for that hot rod Marshall distortion?

Marshall Vintage Modern (Hi dynamic range) + RAT = works for me

PS : Now i just have to get a Vintage Modern for myself.

I've used both a HBE Paraedrive and a Barber Direct Drive with excellent results.

I s'pose there are MANY ways to go about, getting a late 80s-like sound . . .


. . . but i also think the RAT is thee most 'period-correct' way to go.

I remember, from '88 (when i picked up the guitar) to 91, there was NOT a lot to choose from in the guitar stores.

Rat / Boss / Ibanez, and the few DOD's.
At Least where i live.

Guvnor and Jackhammer get really busy.
For me, the essence of that tone is the highs either getting rolled off from cascaded grit tones conflicting or just having heavy duty EQ mush from 9v power. Lots of sustain.

And the better way to say this is "What pedals did i use for metal in the late 80's?" Because those were the ones I had - in the 80's….

Boss HM2 will totally do it, actually. Crank the gain down to 1ish and eff with the EQs (or not, keep the eq dimed and have a nasal, boxy sound dirt).

80's metal ala Ozzy, Priest or Motorhead I say an MXR Distortion +. For all of that hairband crap Ace likes get a RAT.

Crack open Ebay and look for something from Digitech that isn't a Grunge. I just saw

Take your pick. Most of them are based on the DOD 250 circuit with various bleepblorps added in for spice.
