What Pick and why?

Re: What Pick and why?

I've used Fender's Heavy or Extra Heavy 346 shape (rounded triangle) in celluloid for the last 25 years. At the time, I was being heavily influenced by Carlos Santana, and he was using a huge triangle pick at the time. I couldn't find any of those (though I did use them for a period of time in the 80's) at the time and these were the biggest that I could get ahold of. I grew to like the feel of them and developed a tendency to slide the pick down the strings prior to starting a solo. These picks are the only ones that will let me do that and sound a certain way. I need them to kind of be eaten up by the string on the way down, so it kind of lent itself to a certain style.

Re: What Pick and why?

One point of interest, a fellow player onetime shared a tip with me that someone shared with him. If you take those big triangle fender picks (Doritos) and practice with them, and then plick up a normal small pick when you actually play a gig (or record), it's so much easier, and gives your control a boost. I tried it, and it does tend to work.
Worth a try as a technique booster in any case.

Re: What Pick and why?

.73 (mabey? cant read any of them anymore haha) yellow totex :P. Good as it gets ;).

Re: What Pick and why?

I have been using these Fender 1.14mm bright purple ones for a long time, I usually only have to get a new one when I lose the one I'm using.

Re: What Pick and why?

i actually found this neat article on picks oddly enough on www.guitarnoise.com basically it said thin picks are consider anything under .40!!!!! mediums ranged form .40 to 1.00mm! and anythign beyond that is heavy. Well in any case bottom line, heavy picks are great for solos but suffer in the rythm deparetment while thin picks suffer in solos but are great for strumming. Mediums are good for both. i guess my new .88mm's are mediums but they are great for soloing!

Re: What Pick and why?

1mm and 0.75 Pickboy Carbon nylons, 1mm black Dunlop nylons (not tortex), Orange Tortexes, Blue Tortex weird things (

So what medium pick size(s) do you think is both???

after testing enough picks its all about preference, and what your will to sacrifice over one another ie" soloing and strumming.

Re: What Pick and why?

And once again i have switched back to my trusty ornage .60 tortex picks!!! haha i know unbelievable but i did, after playing for a few wweeks with the green tortex's they just seem to hard for me, and i went back to the ornage one and low and behold my soloing was just as good only my strumming seemed alot more smoothing as well! Goes to show you if its not broken don't fix it! PLus the .60 right now seemt sound alot nicer on acoustic guitar as well.

Re: What Pick and why?

The orange Dulop Tortex (.60mm) for accoustic and the same thickness in jazz size for electrics. The smaller jazz picks have really allowed me to tighten the accuracy of right-hand technique. They also place your thumb close to the strings so you can use pinch harmonics on the fly!!

Re: What Pick and why?

Personally.. Dunlop Ultex 1mm (I think) and Jazz III's work the best for me... not really an advocate of green tortex like the rest of the world  no offence guys :)

When I do play acoustic with a pick I would have to say I really like the feel and snap of the Dunlop Match Pik nylons... although I don't remember which gauge... whatever feels right.

Re: What Pick and why?

Dunlop Tortex Sharp (1.35MM)
They have great attack and a nice little bite. And its got that MEAN sound.

Re: What Pick and why?

Dunlop Gator Grips 0.96mm rule. :smoker:

Re: What Pick and why?

I've settled! Heavy Fender premium celluloids are now my favorite. Too bad Ibanez doesn't make those Paul Gilbert signature picks anymore.

I don't understand light or medium picks, they sound flappy and bend or break under heavy abuse.

Scratch that!!! I switched right back to the green tortex again! haha after playing with the thinner ornage tortex it just didn't feel right anymore because if wasn't sturdy enough i guess im stuck with heavier picks now.
