What Pick and why?

Re: What Pick and why?

Dunlop gator grip 1.5s (green). Thicker picks seem to power effortly through the strings to me, must have to do with the extra mass. I don't hang up on strings as much with them (still do though :D)

Yes. Ultex works great for electric and acoustic. Awesome attack and bite. The string feedback through the pick is unmatched IMHO. They never wear down and no matter how hard I try I cannot break one. :22:

I love the ultex too. The little snap I feel in my fingers when I strike a hard power chord :32: :32: :32:

Re: What Pick and why?

hmm these ultex picks seems really strong! i dontknow but my tortex .88 hasnt really worn out a bit on me yet, and ive been giving it alot fo playing time on that one pick, both acoustic and electric. I only own 4 green tortex standard picks! haha Just to see how they fair and so far to be honest it sounds alot better than my older ornage tortex picks, my solos are less sloppy and dont hit unintended strings much, and my chords are mroe powerful and clearer. Also they seem alot mroe durable than my much thinner .60 picks..for obvious reasons.... but right now the decision is still up in the air i could switch back any moment, like i always do back to my comfort zone....

Re: What Pick and why?

Ibanez Steve Vai signatures.

But cause i'm poor i use the free jim dunlop 1mm usa nylons I get.

Re: What Pick and why?

1mm dunlop nylon for me. I tested a lot of picks but this one just seems right for me.

Re: What Pick and why?

green Tortex(.88mm), love the grip... My problem is that I go through picks too fast. They always get rounded off at the tip after a few band practices, I hate that because I love the "dig" I get on a brand new pick. I wish picks would last longer for me.

Re: What Pick and why?

Dunlop Nylon .38mm, yeah the paper thin pick, that or the blue Wahbash standards, or a Fender thin (or whatever thin). Yeah, technically a thin pick moves around to much, and robs you of dynamic control, and works against economy of motion ... That being said, medium and heavy are the better picks technically (like the Jazz III)... But I like the attack of those thins (especially the .38mm), as they are very clean with hot pups, if I need more oomph of the lower strings, I'll switch to normal thins (over the super thin), they also work well for getting a brighter sound thru a dark rig with the volume turned down. I account this to the fact that they allow you to transfer a large amount of kinetic energy into attack of the string, but with no pull thru for sound you get the attack of picking hard, but without the sustain and over travel of the string ... put another way, more energy goes into the attack portion of the envelope with minimal effort, and string displacement.

Are Dunlop Jazz III's good for faster, precise solo work? They seem like they would be. I currently use Dunlop Nylon 1mm's. I like how the edges are sorta rugged, giving a slightly serrated-edge attack.

Re: What Pick and why?

for shredding im going to assume a fairly heavy pick, anything fomr .73 and up should work fine, my solos are nicer becasue of the thicker pick

Re: What Pick and why?

ive been going back and forth between .88 tortex and round triangle .88 ultex. i like the bigger size of the ultex ones i got, but they seem a lot floppier and break easier. if only dunlop made rounded triangle tortex. i had a fender pick like that once, it was perfect, but i lost it and i only had one for some reason. i think i stole it from a friend or something. ive been on the search for those picks for over a year, still nothing

Re: What Pick and why?

I personally like heavy gauge. Use them for both acoustic and electric. Brand doesn't matter to me, although I have a ton of Dunlops!

Re: What Pick and why?

After much deliberation as to which pick worked best for electric/acoustic/different string guages/tunings/etc, etc, etc.... I said "f*ck it" and went back to the green Tortex .88 for everything.

I've found that now I spend more time actually playing rather than trying to decide which chunk of plastic worked best :)

Re: What Pick and why?

Fender 351s, white, heavy thickness. I've only ever used Fenders. They just have the right feel and sound to them.
