I think what you hear is m mostly that.

Guaranteed from '79 (Lovedrive) to the 80's Scorpions heyday with all of their hits, in his "trouble guitar" ('63-'64 black strat) it was a creme colored Bill Lawrence L90XL:

CORRECT. Mattias used the creme L90XL in his black Strat which had (and still has) an inductance level of 6.0 and Becky Lawrence has confirmed this. The black model available back then had 4.0 inductance. Wilde still makes the 6.0 and 4.0 models and Bill expanded the L90 line. They now come in 2.0, 2.8, 4.0, 6.0 and 8.0 models and all of them are now available in creme, black or parchment colors. I saw the Scorps in 1980 and his tone with that black Strat was killer. I prefer the L90's over the L500's because the L90's are crunchier.
