I am looking to fit my epiphone les paul with new pickups i was going to just replace them with gibson pickups but i was advised to get seymour duncans instead so what do you recommend i put in. I have A JB and a Jazz in my schecter would these be good to put in the les paul. I play anything from indie to metal so would need pickups that can cover pretty much any style of music i wanna play Thanks for your help in advance

Re: what pickups should i put in my les paul

I use a Duncan Distortion in the bridge of my Les Pauls with great results in my opinion.....I've had one in my main Paul for about 15 years, I stopped looking after I discovered them!

Re: what pickups should i put in my les paul

Put in the ones that sound the best to you! LOL!

OK seriously, The JB/Jazz combination is a very good one. So is JB/'59 & Pearly Gates/'59.

I have a JB/Pearly Gates combo in my LP right now.

Re: what pickups should i put in my les paul

You already have a guitar that has a jb/jazz setup, so I'd go for the traditional Les Paul sound with a set of 59s or Seth Lovers.

The 59b will do metal if that's what you want. :) If you're under a lot of gain, I'd maybe use a 59b/jazz neck if you want to keep the neck balanced tonewise with the bridge.

Re: what pickups should i put in my les paul

I'd try a 59 bridge and a 59 neck on for size first.

Put the 59 brige as close to the strings as possible to dial harshness out.

If the 59 neck is too bassy (which is quite possible) then just send it in and get a jazz neck!

I would just buy the 59' set for 130 or whatever it sells for.

Re: what pickups should i put in my les paul

The thing is the shop where im buying them is ordering them in for me and putting em in so i wont really be able to test them out till there in there so wanna make sure i get the right ones 1st time round

Re: what pickups should i put in my les paul

What sort of sound are you after?

I tend to like hotter pups. I went w/ a JB in the bridge, and a PG in the neck.

Re: what pickups should i put in my les paul

If i could get a slash type sound out of them that would be great. I know ill never sound exactly the same due to the equipment he uses but im just using the slash sound as a guideline

Re: what pickups should i put in my les paul

PG in the bridge; '59 in the neck

~or hotter~

JB in the bridge; PG in the neck

I think you'll like either setup.

Re: what pickups should i put in my les paul

The Pearly Gates is the perfect neck pickup for a Les Paul. For all styles! It's bright on the top end and warm in the mids but has a soft bass - not muddy or boomy.

In the bridge I think you'd like a Custom. Fat and punchy, tight bottom end, strong mids and highs, cuts through the mix.

The PGn / Custom is a great rock and metal combo in a Les Paul.

Re: what pickups should i put in my les paul

I think Im gonna go with either a pearly gates set or a pearly gates in the neck and a JB in the bridge position gonna go get em ordered on monday. can you order these with pickup covers on

You can't go wrong w/ the JB/PG setup. I think you'll really like it.

Are you going to go with open bobbins or nickel covers? What color is your LP?

Here's mine. JB/PG w/ zebra bobbins in my LP:

Simon, do you think the PG is better for the neck of the LP than the Jazz? I absolutely cannot stand the 59'(n) in my Lester, and I wanted something with a little more clarity in the neck than the APH. I have not liked the PG in the past, but have never tried the Jazz.

Re: what pickups should i put in my les paul

A pair of 59's is a great all around set - hard to go wrong.
The Jazz/JB isn't Seymour's fave for nothing! Not to mention a sales leader...
The PG/Custom, is a little more distinctive, but also a great all around combo from what I've seen here. Can only directly speak for the PG neck there - which rules in any case.

Those would be my three all around sets.

Re: what pickups should i put in my les paul

try Pearly Gates

or PGb/APh1n

if you don't need as much attitude in the bridge, go APH1's

They are GREAT pups!

+1 Any of the 3 Customs....Custom (ceramic), Custom 5 (Alnico 5), or CC (Alnico 2), plus a Pearly Gates neck. Those are tones that will put a smile on your face as soon as you get the guitar in your hands.
