or want to learn?

I want to learn sweeping and I want to perfect my economy picking. what are you guys up to?

Re: What playing technique are you working on?

Sweeping would be nice. I'm always trying to learn new things and expanding my arsenal. Recently I've been working on my phrasing of notes.

Re: What playing technique are you working on?

sweeping isn't tooo hard its annoying at first I am using a scale I found some guy on Youtube was using I forget the name but it is really tricky and I like to start out with tricky. I plan to get a better teacher then I have now... my teacher is a blues guy and I am a metalcore-deathmetal player so it doesn't mix very well XD

Re: What playing technique are you working on?

I've tried to learn sweeping...could only get one sweep down cleanly. Right now I'm trying to work on using a steel/brass slide in my rock playing.

Re: What playing technique are you working on?

I am not great at technique, because I never needed to be. I was the guitarist-singer in my band, so I was doing a lot of rhythm, with some simple leads here and there. I have never needed to be overly technical, so when I work on technique, it's really basic things. I find that I'm constantly working on my left hand vibrato, the way I can sustain notes, and just the general way I deliver basic notes. That's sort of been my thing for a while, and I like sticking to it. It's sort of the Gilmour approach to playing the guitar. Make every note count.

Re: What playing technique are you working on?

95% of my focus on guitar goes towards my rhythm technique, but I am also learning blues scales as well.

Re: What playing technique are you working on?

Currently Hybrid picking and Jazz finger style. Also Sight reading if that counts.

Re: What playing technique are you working on?

Trying to clean up my picking technique. 25+ years of bad habits to overcome.

Re: What playing technique are you working on?

yeah my list is:

Sweeping
Being able to write some good rhythms but with technical parts to it.
hybrid picking and sliding up is one of my issues.

Re: What playing technique are you working on?

Scales, solos, etc. I used to be, to quote knophler, strictly rhythm. I'm realizing how satisfying it is to do solo runs. I have pretty good picking intonation, but I also have some stupid clocking/latency issues between hands and I can't upgrade my brain or I void the warranty.

Re: What playing technique are you working on?

I've been working on moderate to low gain soloing, the art of using the guitar's volume knob. For so many years, I only wanted to blast leads full out, but there is a great art to volume swells and skirting the edge of feedback. There is no greater master at subtle techniques than Eric Johnson, and I've been on a major EJ kick lately. It would be one thing to play crass high gain versions of his leads, but I'm trying to nail everything about them (the attitude). Even though the Mesa MKIV is famous for its lead channel, I've found that I am most inspired by R2 in the lowest power mode possible (Triode, Class A, Tweed Power). The Harmonics mode of the amp is very special, I have no doubt I've grown as a player over the last month (and I've been playing for 20+ yrs). It's nice to be newly inspired again.

all of them. part of my prob.. Im too scattered. plus, like Blueman, also trying to learn bass. so Im dabbling in everything. I need to hang up the guitar for awhile and work the bass, but Im afraid to stop. haha. I need to just stop and focus on one thing and learn it through..

Re: What playing technique are you working on?

My weakness is ryhtm.

I was actually on the way to addressing that problem with a pretty serious bass teacher. But he decided to raise prices to $75/hour because of the gas prices (his words, not mine) so I let it go and haven't restarted yet. Oops that is a year ago.

Re: What playing technique are you working on?

Electric:
Hybrid picking (interesting I'm the third to mention it)
"Hendrix style" rhythm

Acoustic:
Independent thumb bass for fingerstyle blues
Alternate chords (in 5th to 9th position with open drone notes)

Re: What playing technique are you working on?

I started economy picking for the first time a few of months ago, but a funny thing happened after TONS and TONS of hard work. I FINALLY figured out the flaw in my alternate picking technique. Now I'm back to alternate picking except I use economy picking wherever it fits best. So I guess I'm back to working on alternate picking now. If I can keep up with what I'm able to do at this point, I might FINALLY after ALL this time, be able to play just about anything as fast as necessary. This is the most exciting point in my practice in the last two years.
