What Pot value for P-90's....250k or 500k ????

Re: What Pot value for P-90's....250k or 500k ????

Ok, tell me why is the diff , between the 500 k in vol, and the the 250 in tone... I just want to learn about it.... Thanks Man !!!!

Re: What Pot value for P-90's....250k or 500k ????

The higher the pot value the more open and clear the pickup is...if you were to use 2 500k pots it would have slightly more top end than my set up and if you were to use 2 250k's it would be a lot darker.

I think that volume pots make a bigger difference.

Gibson currently uses 2 300k pots in P-90 guitars (except for Historic/VOS guitars which get the 500k Volume and 250k Tone) and they sounds like crap...no cut, no clarity...just dark and wooley all the time.

Re: What Pot value for P-90's....250k or 500k ????

I use 500k vol and tone pots and no higher than a .020uf cap. The .047 (.05) sounds too dull and muddy as you roll off the tone pot...it removes to much treble and upper midrange.

I like dual 500k with a .022uf tone cap. A 250k tone is nice too if the guitar is naturally bright as it shaves off just enough top end, and it's not much, but enough to warm it up a bit.

I like 500k pots for tone and volume. If he guitar is bright, I'll use a 250k at the tone pot.

Re: What Pot value for P-90's....250k or 500k ????

It would depend on the guitar, but I like 300K for the bridge volume. Definitely 500K for the neck volume or maybe more. I'm currently running one that measures around 560K.

I'd start with 500K for tone, but mark where the 250K position is. If you find yourself never wanting to go above that, then swap for a 250K pot and get a more useable taper.

Re: What Pot value for P-90's....250k or 500k ????

I like warm bridge PU's, but still need a sharp high end, so I use two 250Ks on the bridge. I always use two 500K's on the neck. .022 caps on both tone pots. When I mix pots on a warmer bridge P-90 (like a Lollar or Rio Grande), I use a 250K on the volume and a 500K on the tone.

That's The Combo of Pu's and .022 caps with the Stock pots on my SG (300k) ???....they almost sound too Hi-FI !!! very bright.....
Should I use another Cap ? What Cap would give me a little darker tone ?
Thank you !!

The cap only comes into play when you dial down the tone pot. If a guitar's bridge PU is too bright for me, I use a warmer magent or one or two 250K's. To me, a bridge P-90 with 500K's is very bright and thin. I like to beef them up with an A8/A4 pair. More mids, less treble, and lots more punch. Cuts thru the mix better on stage (treble tends to primarily 'beam' straight ahead and disperses quickly. Mids and lows penetrate better in a wider field).

500k. I have blower switches on mine and its still not too bright.

Re: What Pot value for P-90's....250k or 500k ????

300k like God and Gibson intended.

But 250 or 500 works. All depends on your ear's preferences. I prefer lower. But you can always turn down a 500.

Re: What Pot value for P-90's....250k or 500k ????

Obvious solution is a no-load 250K pot, or a push pull that is 500K in one position, and 250K in the other.

True for 50's style wiring but I have found that with modern wiring (tone pot wired to the outside lug) that a different value cap is slightly noticeable with the tone put up all the way (no-load, of course). It was really noticeable in one of my Strats when I changed from .022up to .1uf but I could still tell with a .047uf cap. Just to be sure I wasn't hearing things, I tried it with my Frankenstrat that has dual buckers (had a tone control at the time, doesn't now) and same results.
