250K or 500k?

.022, .033 or .047 caps?

Blueman335...? What are you using with those Phatcats of yours, buddy?

Inquiring minds would like to know.

You know - I'm seriously thinking about a stellar Tone tonestyler for the neck of my studio with P-90's. Blueman...

Tone control capacitor value: mostly a matter of taste because the curve when you turn down the pot changes irreversibly, and there isn't much change with the tone pot at "10" (unless you have a low value tone pot). I like 22nF over 47 nF in everything where I tested (didn't mess with 33 nF).

Tone control potentiometer: you get the exact same thing that you get with a 250 Kohm pot at "10" with a 500 Kohm pot turned down to where it measures 250 Kohm. There is no reason to use low values unless you never use it in the more open positions and you need finer graded control.

Volume potentiometer: I find 250 Kohm to be better only with vintage style Fender pickups, and very few exceptions like JBs.

So, 500/500/22 for almost everything, including P-90s for me.

+1 Same here. I tried 250k pots with various caps and found those pots too dark regardless what cap I used. I also tried 500k with a variety of caps before settling on .022's as the combination I liked best.

what guitar(s) did you try them with? my squier tele custom (p90) has 500k pots and.22 caps and its still a bit bright for me (agaithis body)maple neck
also stock tone contols wired backward as factory (so much for quality control) fixed that works good still bright(although is is a tele!)

Re: What pots and caps for p90s?

Remember that the volume pot value also depends on the input impedance of your amp, or the first active component in the rig.

Different first stages make more of a difference to the impedance load than 250 versus 500 Kohm volume pots.

Likewise, capacitive load in the cable or rig stages will mess with the frequency of your resonance peak.

When comparing guitar control components you must make sure you don't fiddle with your rig.
