What poweramp to use with my HX Stomp and a Greenback Cab?

So I got myself a new Line 6 HX Stomp, and I'm loving the tones I'm getting from it.

I want to use it with my Marshall 1960AC with Greenbacks. Ideally, I would go for the Duncan Powerstage, but I'm afraid I might push it too hard and blow the speakers. The cab is only rated for 100 Watts.

What else is there that's compact, can be used in a pedalboard, is loud enough to keep up with a drummer, actually sounds good, but doesn't exceed 100W?

Thanks!

Unless you shut off speaker cab sims in the HX Stomp, you're not gonna want to run it through the Marshall cab. Those Greenbacks are not voiced for modeling with cab sims. You need some thing flat and even, a FRFR. Headrush makes some nice powered FRFR's that'll suit the need. Line6 makes a few as well.

If you can run the amp sims without a cab sim, then it should be fine. Any clean power amp will work. The PowerStage 170 would suffice. Just don't turn it up all the way.

You could probably get away with running it into a cab with 70/80's.

Yeah, those a pretty standard in modeling combos. I've used a Classic Lead 80 with one before and it was great. Greenbacks though, not so much with cab sims on in the HX.

Oh, yeah. I'd turn off the cab sim for sure.

Do you guys not think 170W is too much for the Greenback cab to handle?

whats the impedance of the cab? even if its 4ohms, i dont think 170w is too much. you want clean power for this application so having more than you need is fine. do i need a 1000w bass amp to be heard? no, but that gives me all the clean power i need

The cab can be set to either 16 or 4 ohms. It's technically just a standard 1960A (which comes with the little plate on the back that switches impedance and mono/stereo) that I swapped 25W GB's into.

I am aware I don't have to crank the Power Stage all the time, but with a loud metal drummer, sometimes you have to, LOL.

if you run the cab at 16 ohms, the powerstage will put out way less power. its 170w@4ohm, so probably 90w@8 ohms and 50w@16 ohms or something like that. you can usually tell when you are pushing speakers too hard, if it sounds raspy and bad, turn the amp down

Got it, thanks! Will probably be picking up a Power Stage, then.

Wonder if the 200 would be worth the extra bucks.

My Kemper is 600W but I use it with both 2x12 and 4x12 loaded with Greenbacks. As long as the power amp is at regular play levels you'll be fine. The power rating isn't the same as with a tube amp.

If you are going with the Duncan, the 200 looks like the one to get, it also has a cab sim, headphone out, XLR out, Aux In, lots of features that make it worth the extra $.

*EDIT* with the HX, you really don't need all of that, for a basic power amp, the ISP Stealth is another good choice.

If you want a proper Power Amp in a traditional rack size you can't beat Fryette. Their power station products work wonderfully as well. If you are looking for a small form factor I would grab the SD 200 or the larger one.

Thanks, guys! Gonna keep an eye out for either the 170 or 200. I dig both, but I suspect the 170 will be easier to fit in my little Pedaltrain Nano.
