Re: what pups for peavey wolfgang? paf dimarzio?

What amp/rig do you have, what tones are you looking for? Which Wolfgang is it?

Re: what pups for peavey wolfgang? paf dimarzio?

hi theodie, i have a line 6 spider valve amp. i play everything from country to metal. and i want the pups to handle all tones well. thanx

Re: what pups for peavey wolfgang? paf dimarzio?

its a wolfgang with a carved maple top and birdseye maple neck. very nice guitar.

Re: what pups for peavey wolfgang? paf dimarzio?

I had one back in the day.

A spider and a wolfgang and you want versatility, PAF's of any description are a great place to start. What dont you like about the factory pickups or, how do you want new pickups to differ?

the factory pups are too hot. plus the stock bridge didnt come with the guitar, so i want a good matching set. i also know not just any pup will fit so my choices are limited. ive heard the best option is dimarzio.

Dimarzio are one trick pony's. I'd personally go with a set of alnico pro II's, definitely one for the neck, for the bridge you could try the custom 5.

I'd go with something PAF'ish as well. My only worry with A2P in the bridge is how heavy of metal do you want to get? Slash or Metallica? But with a Line 6 you can pick a high gain model I guess.

Still, I'd maybe want something just a tad hotter.

yeah, i want pafs but they wont fit the wolfgang. unless i do routing or modding pups.

you can put duncans in a wolfgang easy. I did it all the time. you just have to shave off the corners of the feet with a bench grinder. any 5th grader can do it. Just be sure to wrap the pup so no metal flakes get into it. personaly i thought every duncan pup sounded to bright in my wolfgang. I say dimarzio air zone/air norton. I liked Tone zone/air norton but sounds like the tone zone might be a little to hot for what you want.

your probably concerned about the long legged base plate of the pickups? you could always get a floor custom shop set of 59s in short legs, those would fit great and its a very versatile set. That or if you don't want to go custom a pearly gates set would work if you want to stay in the PAF'ish realm.

If you want to go a bit more hot rod'ed than that but stil retain some paf'ish vibe i would strongly suggest you look at a Custom for the bridge and a Jazz neck. Ive found that to be a really cool and versatile set that most people seem to be happy with when i mod others guitars. For the Custom you have 3 choices.. basically the regular Custom SH-5 which is the more aggressive sounding of the bunch and can get you a really cool zack wylde kinda of hard rock/metal tone and yet you can dial it in to have some of that pafish vide too when you lower gain, its one of my favorite Duncans. Theres the Custom Custom SH-11 wich would sound warmer and more like the later Van halen stuff, more "brown'ish" sound. Cool pickup if you prefer smoother sound from your guitar, especialy if you think your guitar is too bright. Then theres the Custom 5 which is more like a hot rod'ed 59, has that pafish vibe but with higher output for when you want to push your amp more to get more of a hard rock'ish type tone.

oh i see.. i tought it was a long leg problem but i completly forgot about some guitars are routed like that and need "triangle" legs to fit. If the guitar is that bright then i say go for a Custom Custom bridge and APH neck, this set would smooth things out and sound great for anything from pafish tones to metal!

I almost forgot lol, welcome to the forum!

If you can find one the VHPAF is great. Does everything very well! Kinda of a spongy or soft response in a way, but no way muddy or dull... very cool, even for metal riffs. Gives them a very nice sound compared to how some really really tight pickups do it. Great cleans and touch sensitivity too! Best Dimarzio I've used. As far as Duncans... probably a Demon or a 78... I really want to try a 78! Maybe that new EVH pickup even? I know you don't need to cop VH tones (I don't) but these are just cool pickups!

heres the problem, i dont have a bench grinder. i also dont want to have to mod a simple pup change out. thanx

Re: what pups for peavey wolfgang? paf dimarzio?

let me put this way. i want paf tone without having to grind or file or rout. so im going with dimarzio

Re: what pups for peavey wolfgang? paf dimarzio?

You won't be disappointed. DiMarzios sound best in Wolfgangs.
