what SD pickup has the most low-mids & fat bass?

Just trying to even out a project guitar that has a weird sound. It's very thin sounding double fat alder body strat. Maple neck, maple board, Floyd Rose, 500k pots.

I swear it sounds like a banjo unplugged. The mids are pretty scooped. When plugged in, there a strong bass range but is not fat at all so its more like a "thud" rather than a "wooom". When I try to compensate by turning up the mids on the amp, the highs get very shrill. Turn up the bass and it ends up being boomy instead of fat.

I'll pop in 250k pots but I'm sure that will only slightly help. Any SD pup cure or is this strat for firewood???

I would suggest an Invader SH-8, which sounds very fat and agressive, or a Custom Custom SH-11 which has smooth bass, but a lot of mids and is also fat.

low-mids = cc
low-mids + fat bass = invader

others with low-mids and fat bass are dmz tone/air zone and rio grande bbq. i am sure there are more.

Just a suggestion, the PATB1. Designed for bright guitars with FR's.

I'll let you know how it sounds in mine in a few days.

If it doesnt have to be a duncan check out the dimarzio breed, tone zone and air zone. They have exactly the tone curve you are after - lots of bass and mids and less highs. I have an air zone in a very thin, bright sounding guitar and it works great.

yes. dmz breed is another candidate.

duncan ceramic custom! (sh-5 or TB-5)
this baby is close to a tone zone in the low mids and bass department

That's the one that came to mind for me too: the Duncan Custom. The one with the fattest mids in the Custom series would be the Custom Custom but the Custom also has thick mids and has more lows, IMO.

Fat lower mids are often more present in a guitar with a single cutaway...like a Les Paul. When a guitar becomes a double cutaway and the neck is longer it seems to lose lower mids, IMO.

lew thats how i hear it, the cermaic custom has the fat bass along with the low mids whereas the CC has the not so much bass but a lot of mids
the custom reminds me of the IDEAL tone zone.
it is fatter than fat BUT stays clear and never muddy

Sounds like solid advice. Try the CC first -- if that doesn't work, try a Custom. If that doesn't work, go with the Invader.

If the Invader doesn't beef it up enough then I have two words for you: fire - wood.

Re: what SD pickup has the most low-mids & fat bass?

Thanks guys.....actually I made a mistake in describing the bass. The guitar has a huge strong bass but it's not fat. I think using a bass heavy pup will make it even more boomy.

Essentially, it's a scooped guitar. Plenty of highs and lows but no mids!

the cc is your prescription.

That sounds a lot like my Carvin. I use a Pearly Gates bridge model in the neck and a Custom Custom in the bridge and they work great. They seem to leave much of the lows the way they are, but they round out the highs and fatten the mids very nicely.

Another option would be any 'bucker from the PATB series. They look a bit weird, but are designed specifically for guitars like yours.

Re: what SD pickup has the most low-mids & fat bass?

I'd say CC. Funny enough, I cured a guitar that fits your description with, of all things....a Gibson 498T that I had lying around from one of my LP's. I didn't care for it in the LP, but in my scooped sounding G&L, it supplied the slightly rude mids and low end.
It took a sterile guitar and injected some attitude and put the mids right in the perfect spot.
