What should I expect?

Re: What should I expect?

From the research that I did, They where not originally called 490 I can't remember what but then they changed the name again a finally are now called the 490's but ultimately they are pretty much the same and have the same
The right answer is "T-Tops".

The article number used by Gibson for the standard Humbucker (yes, it was only one, LOL!) was P490H.

The specs are very different from the actual 490R/490T.

So, there you have it.

Yes I think it's something like that and it was the same story, people thought they sounded nice in the neck but the bridge one wasn't such a hit and I think those used A5 opposed the the A2 used in the modern 490. I think the resistance is similar :dunno:

It is NOT. The T-Top was in average 7.35K. The 490R is about 8K.

Anyway, resistance does not say anything about how it sounds. You can have a 7.5K p'up sound muddy and lifeless and a 8.2K that's clear as distilled water and ring like Tibetan Wind Chimes.

Looks like your research is based on assumptions made under false premises, due to popular wrongly interpretation of certain data.

Welcome to the Era of Disinformation! ;)

Exactly, I think you hit it on the nose! (Just don't hit my nose it's currently on the go! Running from a cold) There is no substitute for hands on experience! Too bad my uncles friend didn't keep those old PU's it would of been cool to see them.

Re: What should I expect?

You could go for some SD Pearly Gates? Or Gibson 496r and 500t.

The 496R and 500T are probably not what he is looking for as those are more harsh–I love them but they are very different from the Pearly Gates which is what I think the OP is really looking for in tone but not in "70s Gibsons"

Hey thanks for the suggestion, like Blueman and Treyhaislip stated I currently have "Dirty Fingers" pickups but I will look into the Pearly Gates or maybe even the Seth Lover which have always caught my attention! :22:

But first I have to modify these 490's!! its like an itch I need to scratch!!

There's also the Seymour Duncan Custom Shop :D They could nail it down for you ;)

Re: What should I expect?

Excellent! You might also check out Stewart Macdonald, they have Seth Lover type pups as well as what they call Golden Age. They are very reasonably priced. The only thing is they are not Gibsons. But they are supposed to be very good pups. Good luck and have fun in your search! :-)

Cool beans thanks dude!! gonna take a look!

Re: What should I expect?

Modding them would be great for practice as well. Try a magnet swap and/or replace the flathead pole pieces with hex screws just to see what you can learn and take away from it :) Best of luck finding your tone!

Their PAF's are called Parsons Street (after the address of the original Gibson plant in Kalamazoo). I have a couple sets of the A2 version, they're very good PU's. Excellent specs: unbalanced coils, nickel-silver baseplates and covers, plain enamel wire, wood spacers. A pair costs around $110.

Thanks dude! I'm actually looking for places that sell magnets and stuff, I know Stew Macs and MojoTones so lets see what happens.

Awesome!! I'm gonna look for some sounds clips!! Thank you!!

Re: What should I expect?

That's cool! I've never tried them personally, but for my next build I may have to. A great pickup for a low price is always welcome in my arsenal. Thanks for the info!

Most welcome! I've had great luck with AddicitonFX; however, several forum bros have had issues with them. I've heard only good things about SM and MT–should be solid places to get parts. Best of luck and enjoy!
