Re: What size picks do you use?

I use Dunlop Tortex orange and yellow most of the time (60-Orange, .73-Yellow).

I'll use a few other picks if I am trying to force a certain sound but other wise these do the bulk of it for me, I actually use orange the most. The have a nice snap especially for rhythm playing and I break far less strings than I used to. I hit the strings fairly hard if I use anything much heavier I snap strings left and right. When I play bass I use the yellows, the orange aren't really strong enough to get the attack I like on bass strings.

I loved some old tortoise shell picks I had but replacing them is illegal in the US. I certainly can live with the tortex, I don't need to have any turtles killed for my sake - plus my little girl wouldn't likely speak to me again, she loves turtles.

Re: What size picks do you use?

I use clayton rounded triangle ultems .88. I also VERY carefully gradually drill a 1/4 inch hole in the center where my fingers go. It took a lot of cracked picks to learn how to do this successfully. I then take duct tape and cover the holes so to keep it from cracking. Then poke through the duct tape to uncover the hole.

For picks, I always prefer the heaviest f*cking things I can find. I still don't know of anything heavier than a 2.0 mm. Does anyone?

Dunlop do a Big Stubby in 3mm (they come in 1mm and 2mm too, IIRC), I have one kicking about somewhere...

I usually use Dunlop Totex Blue 1mm or Purple 1.14mm.

Re: What size picks do you use?

JAZZ III all the way.
aren't they like 1.38mm or something? I don't know...I just know they work

also, I've used a bone pick, about 2-3mm..got it off a guy who was really into Django, and i've found that it really brightens up acoustic guitars.

Re: What size picks do you use?

has anyone else ever used the little clips you find on bread bags? Might be a little small for most tastes, but I like to "choke up" on my pick (probably bad technique) so it doesn't matter. Plus the little hole in the middle makes it never slip out of your fingers. If you need more girth just tape two together!

Or am I just the cheapest bastard in the world?

Damn, that's huge. :) I'll have to check that out and see if I like it. Thanks, btw.
Yeah, way too big for me... I've heard they're good for shredding real fast, I had a load at one stge, can only find one now, how come picks either evaporate into thin air or hang around forever?...

Re: What size picks do you use?

Dava control picks - I seem to get more control with them.

I also started practicing with stylus picks to try to improve my picking technique (I tend to dig into the strings a little too hard).

Hello everyone. Stumbled onto this website, strangely enough, doing a google search for a particular kind of pick. Danglybanger, you're on the right track, but don't use those little bread tabs for picks. Those little things are my straplocks. They fit perfectly on most strap buttons over the strap, eliminating the need for Dunlop or some other straplocks. As for picks, there are only two kinds of pick in existence: Tortex Purples 1.14mm and CRAP! I love these jewels. By the way, I don't play those pretentious 6-string contraptions, I play bass! The purples, for me have the best ratio of stiffness for the thickness, but more than that, this material seems to be the only stuff that picks are made of that seems to(this will sound flaky)transfer the energy from my hand to the string. I have a couple real tortoiseshell picks that are retired from use due to the scarcity that do not have the same tonal quality as the Tortex. Way back, before I saw the light and was still playing the 6-string, I used the green Tortex teardrop shaped ones. I think they were a medium-heavy. How some players use those thin floppy jobs, I'll never figure out.

Re: What size picks do you use?

I use Dunlop .88 green tortex. I've used them for a long time and most likely always will. They dont slip outta my hand, last quite a while, great sound, great pinches and comfortable

Re: What size picks do you use?

Dunlop Ultex 1mm with custom printing on it.Those picks are just nice and really durable

Re: What size picks do you use?

I use Dunlop Tortex .88 (green). I use the regular ones and the SHARP ones. The SHARP ones "feel" faster to me when soloing...

I use Dunlop Tortex yellow (I forget the size) for acoustic guitars...

Re: What size picks do you use?

Recently switched from thin Fenders to 2mm Big Stubby. Use it now for nearly everything

Only the ones you don't like hang around, I've noticed.

ohh- I use lil' stubby 3.0 mm most of the time, which I love but they are a little to small for chord work, and the big stubby's are to big for me so i use a dunlop 208 which is probably 3.0mm as well but made out of a different plastic that is soft and hard at the same time............all right this has gone on to long!

Re: What size picks do you use?

I use a clayton white delrin 2mm pick.

My teacher, Tom Hess, let me have one of his (it may have been a 1.5 or a 1) and I order 2mm with a little sketch I did on the pick...

such a large size boggles the minds of my peers, which is paritally why I use it.

Before my claytons I used Dunlop Sharp 1.5 and Dunlop Jazz picks.

I use Gibson Thins for strumming a very soft stuff, so I don't get as much of the pick talking (I bought the Gibby picks in bulk so I've GOT to use them)

Re: What size picks do you use?

For electric: Dunlop Mini Stubby (Jazz size) 3.0 mm
For acoustic: Real tortoise shell, same size as the Mini Stubby (sorry, Mr. Tortoise)

Re: What size picks do you use?

I use the Fender pick that's shaped like a Fender medium only it's smaller. It's about 3/4 the size of a Fender Medium. I buy them by the gross because no one carries them...especially not in the heavy version I prefer. Lew
