what speaker cable?

To connect my amp to my cabinet. What difference does the gauge create? I figure a shorter one would be good for me (I have a 6', 3' would probably be enough).

Re: what speaker cable?

From PROCO website;

"SPEAKER CABLES
Make sure that the cable is unshielded and of at least 18 gauge wire. Shielded cables are not good for speaker hookup because they can’t carry the current demands of a loudspeaker. They can also cause problems because of their capacitance, which can result in amplifier instability or breakdown. Be especially careful of phone plugs on speaker cables -- check for loose tips, broken insulators, etc. As before, the basic testing process is the same as that for instrument cables."

...I like Proco products. I have a massivvely thick and well built speaker cable called the "PROCO GaURDIAN " that was very pricey new,for my best rig.
I've got good qaulity thick gauge cables for all my speaker cabinets(and have also rewired my cheap stock speaker cabinet wires). I hate cheap crap.

Re: what speaker cable?

I use the cheapest monster speaker cable I could find.

but I've heard very good things cutting a standard extension cord and putting 1/4 inch jacks on it.

Re: what speaker cable?

The extension cord should be a good trick. They are very well made and thick as hell.

Re: what speaker cable?

I have a nice one that Lord Valve made for me with the express purpose of mating head to cab. But, on hte vintage-style amps I make, I use a good heavy cloth covered solid core wire and twist them for neatness. I've never been able to hear much difference to be honest.
