What speaker for best Fender sound?

When I emailed Ted Weber, I told him I was looking for a SRV overdriven, ZZ Top, early Zeppelin to a degree type of vibe. Could that be why he recommended the ceramic speakers? What are the tonal differences between the alnico and ceramic?

Maybe that's part of the problem. The two cabs I have with the Celestions are closed back. Could that make much of a difference as far as getting the Fender sound? Ted Weber is recommending ceramic speakers, Lew is recommending alnico. Which Guru do I listen to, LOL?

Closed back makes a huge diff in tone compared to open back. Alot tighter tone with more bass and less treble, IMO, with a closed back or sealed cab.

For the classic tweed Bassman guitar tone you want an open back cab.

I do tend to like ceramic better in closed back cabs and alnic better in open back cabs...maybe that's why Ted is suggesting ceramic: you have a closed back cab!

And no tweed Bassman's from the 50's came with cermaic magnet speakers...only alnico. Alnico P10R's or alnico P10Q's. That's it.

Ceramic 10's don't have that same touch sensitive plucky tone that alnico magnet 10's have...although I do like mixing them!

In my '51 tweed Super I have an original Jenson P10R and an originals Jenson C10N. They compliment each other nicely, but it's the P10R that provides most of the treble while the C10N provides the bass....sort of.

AAAAAH--that may be the thing. I've got an OPEN back cabinet. I think this may be the Bassbreaker cab, but it's a tweed copy, open back cab. Does the original Bassman have a closed back? I was under the assumption that all the old Fenders had open back, so I was not specific either on this forum or with Ted.

And you're both probably better guitar players than I am, LOL!:laugh2:

The original tweed Bassman is an open back four x 10 combo amp.

:bowdown: a little off topic, with apologies, but lew's thoughts on ceramics in closed backs and alnicos in open backs intrigued me -- i had an alnico eminence legend 122 in my Classic 30, and finally didn't care for it -- too thin -- i replaced it with a g12h30, which of course is ceramic, and i like it a lot -- what if i got the weber version of the g12h30, but in alnico -- would i be even happier than i am now...............?

Lew is accurate in his description of these speakers...

I have not heard him or Ted play so I can not say who is better, Lew or Ted.

If I'm not mistaken, the 122 is more for modeling amps, like the Line 6 Vetta and things like that. A kinda flat response. If I'm wrong, someone please correct me. As far as the Weber version...probably just a matter of taste. I've have the Celestions and they are phenomenal. Never heard the Webers, though Mojo is supposed to have a version of the Celestions that the guitar gurus on this forum seem to like better.

:hijacked: Don't worry about the hijack. They've never bothered me. As long as people don't get into fights and ruin the thread, there's a lot to learn from a good hijack! :cool2:
