Many years back a friend had one, and it had a Celestion of some sort. However, I don't know if that was stock, or after market.

My 60 watter has a red labeled Duncan 75 watter. I want to know what it's based on (or what it is) because it sounds pretty darned good in my old jenings made Vox 2x12 cab. If Eminence, Celestion, or JBL make something like it, I'd like to get a couple for this cab.

Very early Eminence, which was an off-shoot of CTS...from OCS, our biggest supplier...
In 1966, Bob Gault founded Eminence and what was to become the world's largest loudspeaker manufacturing company after working as an engineer for Magnavox and CTS (Chicago Telephone Supply). Ironically, Gault started Eminence hoping to manufacture three 18" speakers per day, based on a commitment from Ampeg's Everett Hull. Under the leadership of Gault and most recently his son, Rob, the company's capacity has grown to over 10,000 speakers per day, employing over 200 people.
I currently have 2 100watt Convertibles in the shop, only one has the original spkr in it...

why was it called convertible? never heard duncans made amps before... why discontinued?

It was named the convertible because of the modular nature of the amp. There's several different preamp "modules" (circuit boards) that can be interchanged in order to get drastically different tones out of one amp. For example, one module would help give the amp a black-face Fender sound, whereas changing it to a different module would turn the amp into a high-gain Marshall.

Ah nostalgia. Old threads, old amps. Duncan amps are just one thing I miss about the 80's.

yeah, 14 years ago, so what... They were definitely Celestion G-12k 85s, which were 8 ohm speakers capable of handling most of the power. The amp could probably do best with a 15" 4 ohm cab and 12" internal or 12"external cab. The active bass eq is too low for even the g-12k, just muddies as soon as it's audible. So it think it was designed to drive a 15". i don't know if it has a crossover built in but I wouldn't doubt it.

I think it may have been Evan Skopp himself that said they were a reliability nightmare. Dang near bankrupted the company. IIRC.

I can confirm this; I have two "Seymour Duncan" labeled 1x12 cabs, and each has the Celestion G-12K85.
Sounds like they came with Eminences sometimes as well...

Also, it was lots of fun changing the modules and getting new sounds but reliability issue was a nightmare. It would just die in the middle of a gig, I think it turned out two resistors in the preamp were taking too much heat and would burn out. The third time it happened I sold it off.

I liked the concept, but couldn't afford one. I seem to recollect that they could be noisy.
