What Strat Set For Steve Gaines Tones

Re: What Strat Set For Steve Gaines Tones

My first thought was Alnico pro II, but more knowledgeable people on this thread have said SSL-1. So my question is, why not the Alnico Pro IIs?

Re: What Strat Set For Steve Gaines Tones

I know this is the SD forum and all that, but stock Fender pickups are great, I had a '65 Strat back in 1968 and the pickups were great and in 1983 my '57 Reissue Strat has great vintage spec pickups that have mellowed well with age.
If you want to get close to Steve Gaines, practice and work on his techniques, he get's a unique tone out of his Strat due to his fingers and picking technique.
Ed King, whom Steve replaced in LS, also has his own style with a Strat "Sweet Home Alabama", over on the LPF where ED posts, do a search and he may have commented on Steve's playing, iirc..:)

when i hear steve gaines i hear a pretty good strat tone but i dont know if its all that unique. i dont think anyone will disagree that a '65 strat is a great example of what a good strat is.

the alnico II pros are great pups, i have a set, but they arent classic fender. josh may like them better than the ssl1 though. since they are a little warmer.
