Re: What String Gauge\Thickness do you use?

Currently I have 10-46 on my Number One and Canadacaster, and 11-49 on my new Strat. I will probably switch Number One over to 11-49 at the next string change. The tone improvement is substantial.

On the acoustic, I use Phosphor Bronze 11-52.

My brand is D'Addario. I tried Ernie Ball, and I kept breaking them.

10-46. Their what I need.
Just the right mix between heavy and light.

I used to use 10-52's but after lots of playing (and blisters) and no noticeable difference in tone (i was in a detune band that broke up) I went back. Never regreted going back - ever!

Re: What String Gauge\Thickness do you use?

11-52 with 24.75 in E. I don't really use other tunings. 11-50 for some trashing out with a 25.5 guitar. I guess that I'll start using 10-46 on a 25.5 for lighter music.

Re: What String Gauge\Thickness do you use?

9-46 on the Schecter and Ibanez, 9-42 on the strat sometimes. I'm sure that will bump up to 9-46 once I drop the humbuckers into it.

Re: What String Gauge\Thickness do you use?

I use custom gauge Ernie Balls on all my guitars: 9, 11, 14, 22, 32, 38. The reason for the somewhat thin upper part is that I almost always play single tones. I hardly use chords for rythm parts either - so the bending possibility becomes important also on the upper strings. It is however almost the same gauges as used by Malmsteen and Billy Gibbons, but hey use a 8 as a E-string. Malmsteen also has a very fat low E, but tune down to D#. I use regular tuning.

Re: What String Gauge\Thickness do you use?

When it comes to strings i have been wanting to set up some of my guitars with thicker strings and some with thiner... For example i think my stock strat would be great with 11-52's... mean while i want 9's on my Jacksons... all electric guitars i own right now have 10-46's but i should have different set ups on some of these babies.....

Just a slight aside here - does anyone know anyone who uses 7-36? That's amazingly light! I knew a guy who used 8s on a Les Paul and he always had great tone!

I played a customers Wolfgang set up with 8's and i hated the thiner then thin strings.. I have big heavy hands and built like a linebacker... The thiner then 9's do not work for me that well... I never knew they made 7's!!!!

Re: What String Gauge\Thickness do you use?

Hybrid 9-46. I'm thinking of switching back to straight .10's though because the top .9's don't quite have the same tension as .10's.

Re: What String Gauge\Thickness do you use?

I had 7s in the mid-70s. Can´t say I had a great tone, but it was rumour saying that Clapton used 7s. Now there is a rumour saying that Steve Vai use an 8...as a B-string (!). Don´t know if it´s true; if so, one can wonder what he use for the E-string. Also if so; he sure needs those maxi-powered Evos...

Hehe, yeah... 07's were a 70\80's phenomenon, i suppose :)

I once tried a set of 08's, and well... i sounded like Mike Oldfield on "Moonligth Shadow" :D

I believe Adrian Wanderberg used 7's ;)

.008-.038 Labella (tensile strength equals most other's .009's)
I've noticed that all of the guitarists I admire use very light strings and have an amazing thick tone. They work great for me and my legato.

I think I'm going to switch to 11's though. I'm starting to feel like I'm punishing myself with the thicker strings.

I know what you mean! I used to play a 13-56 set on my Strat (in standard or Eb) and after about 6 months I started to get a little pain in my hand and wrist so I've decided to drop it down. Im at 11-50 now but I'm interested in trying a 10.5 set.

Was his name Billy Gibbons?

D'Addario EXL120

I haven't play 10's in almost a decade. All my guitars are setup for 9's.
