Re: What String Gauge\Thickness do you use?

I think that there's alot of hype behind thick strings and the whole SRV craze. They sound great and chimey for jazz or if you downtune, but once they tarnish, the strings just dull out IMO.

Lighter strings, especially the non wound ones, will tend to sing more, IMO. I guess I like my strats sounding as thin as possible.

+1. I used to go with a 12 set on my strat due to the SRV idea. Now that im using 9-42, its alot easier to play, the strings sound better longer, and IMO i get a better tone being able to control the guitar more rather than struggle with a "thicker" tone using big strings.

My thougths and experience excactly! :smokin:

Re: What String Gauge\Thickness do you use?

strat - 9-42
LP copy - 11-52
RG 7621 - 8-56 (treble strings from an 8s set, bass from a 12s..)
XB-500 - 50-153

one five string, two six strings, and a 7 string :burnout:

i use 11-48 ernie balls on all 3 strats.
2 of them nickel wound, one pure nickel

Re: What String Gauge\Thickness do you use?

I'm about to order a few sets of EXL115 (11 - 49). Hope it doesn't alter the neck relief significantly, I don't want to have to start piddling about with the truss rod.

I like D'Addario, but the nickel plating doesn't seem to last long; I ought to give something else a go but I haven't got the time (or money!) to try everything!

12s are a bit of a minority interest, I would think 10s are right for most players; 9s are just too slack, and don't get the best out of the guitar.

Not this old thread AGAIN!

Stop recycling them, dammit

I`m now using 10-46 on the advice of XSSIVE. Takes a little getting used to after using 9-42 for so long.

Takes a week or so if you practice regularly.

I've just been through the same process - building back up to 11s after not playing at all for many years. As someone eloquently pointed out on another thread, "9s suck!".

Re: What String Gauge\Thickness do you use?

D'Addario 11-49's.

My first guitar came strung up with 9-42s, as they all do, but I shifted to 10-46's pretty quick and at that point, I didn't think much about the difference, just kept learning to play.

I shifted to 11's recently because I wanted less fret buzz, and I love em. Bending wasn't much harder, and I just love the feel and tone of thicker strings.

And total lol at 11-49's not being in the list... it's a standard guage :smack:

Re: What String Gauge\Thickness do you use?

10-46 works for me!
i`m thinking of trying 11-52 gauges. need something to work with

Re: What String Gauge\Thickness do you use?

.09 standard set on the 54 Strat, .10 standard set on all others. Gibson Les Paul VR on all. I will probably go to the .10 light top/heavy bottom 10/52, i think, on the Les Pauls and regular 10's on the Strats and Tele once the callouses and fingers get built up again.
