what strings brand for strat

Re: what strings brand for strat

will string cleaners add build up/gunk to the fretboard? I've tried a few brand looking for strings for my les paul (tried D'add,DR,elixirs and EB) and I ended using EB because it reminds me of peter green tone (I love the green god). And it last long enough (with the 'zing') for me (<2months) I wonder why I keep hearing people say that EB dont last maybe it's because after I finish playing I put the guitar in its case. But I keep breaking the B string when bending 2 fret and I don't set my tail too tight. And to DR strings users isn't DR strings very bright even after a day or two?

I'm speaking of Ernie Balls, Daddarios, and GHS. The three most common brands. And when it comes down the their basic nickel wrapped steel strings, the most commonly used kind of string, there is no real difference. I've heard in passing that EB's and Daddarios are made in the same factory, not sure if it's true but it wouldn't surprise me. They're all made the same way and of the same materials, of course they're the same. I don't think i'm alone in this.

I use Fender Super Bullets, 9-42, on my G&L Legacys, Comanches and S-500s. The bullet end does make a difference in tone, feel and tuning stability. If I can't get Bullets, I'll use D'Addario XLs.

String cleaner is a good thing...I use the Dunlop 65 product.

I think you are alone in this. :)

Re: what strings brand for strat

to give woody tone 'unplugged'? I currently use elixir nano 11's and when I noodle with it unplugged, it sounds so bad like 'tenk' and the scale length makes it worse. when plugged I can get enough wood (thanks to the tone knob). I want to get "uung" like sound again unplugged. uncoated strings is alright I slap in some elixirs because I don't use the strat much..

To me it sounds like you may have a problem with the tone of roundwound strings in general... I would recommend trying a set of Half-rounds, and if that gets you in the right direction but not far enough then a set of flatwound strings. They´re actually quite common in jazz circles ;)

There is little to no difference between most string brands. Daddario, Ernie Ball, GHS are all going to sound and feel the same. I've been using coated strings for about two years now. I've tried elixirs, daddario, EB, and GHS and they all sound and play similar if not the same. They're all made the same, steel wrapped in nickel. There are some that are all nickel and they have their own sound too, less bright.

There are some makers who do things a little different. DR's are supposed to wound a little differently, but I would guess that they don't feel our sound entirely different. Dunlop strings are cool, they're wound to tension so they take practically no time to stretch which ultimately makes them last longer.

I work at GC and for a long time I worked behind the Accessories counter selling LOTS of guitar strings. What it comes down to is blind brand loyalty. Or something like that...

With all due respect, this post tells me that you don`t know very much about strings.

While there ARE AFAIK only about 5 plants in the USA (there are another 10-15 in the rest of the world IIRC) that manufacture strings, there are literally dozens of different alloys, each with their own tone, for both wrap and core. Steel is not = steel, Stainless steel is not = stainless steel, and NIckel plated steel is not = nickel plated steel. S235JR, P460N and 13CrMo4-5 are all "steel", with very different properties, the came holds true in stainless for X6CrNiTi18-10 and X21CrNiSi15-12. And of course the thickness of nickel plating also makes a difference.

There are 3 common profiles of core (Round, hexagonal, octagonal), each with their own tonal and tensile properties. There are dozens of ways to wind a string, both under tension and slacked, each with their own tonal and tensile properties.

Then we have all this modern cryogenic smack and whatnot....

While what you say holds true to a certain extent, as some strings are simply relabeled and others share construction materials and /or methods, basic physics and metallurgy easily invalidates a blanket statement like that. There is a very good reason that books like "Die Gitarre und ihr Bau" by Franz Jahnel (the German Luthier`s Bible) have huge sections just on string construction, calculations, and tonal properties.

They are not made the same. GHS boomers have a much different core wire to wrap size ratio than mots strings , for instance.

Dad built EBs for many many moons to EB specs, not the same specs as DAD strings. . EB bought all the old machines from DAD, and started building strings in house themselves several years ago. Those two also have their own ideas on core to wire ratio and and they are different.

IOW, not the same.

Re: what strings brand for strat

I don't have a brand preference. I can like/work with any brand/sound. To the original question; I used to use Dean Markley Pure Nickel Wraps on bright strats. A SS wrap would not be reccommened for more wood and less "tenk".

Re: what strings brand for strat

I'm not that picky, but I like plain old D'Addarios. I did not like their coated strings - it wasn't the sound; they just chewed up my fingertips a bit more.

GHS Burnished Nickels are a little more mellow but also a nice choice.

I use D'Adarrio 11's(11 thru49) on all my electrics. I use the j17(13-56) on all my acoustics

Wow, nothing personal but, I couldn't disagree with that statement more.

Sorry man, I think you might be alone in this.

I Love D'Addario XL .010s and the EB Rock N Roll .010s...I notice not only different tonality, but different feel from the different string brands..The EB Cobalts are really nice, but kinda pricey!

Re: what strings brand for strat

Guys, I've met lots of players who agree. I guess I'm not explaining myself properly. I can honestly say in my own experience that I feel and hear no defining difference in nickel played steel strings, at least nothing worth brand loyalty. And with what I do for a living I sell a lot of strings and talk to a lot of different people about strings. Many feel this way. There are also many who have brand loyalty and stick to what they like.

I don't mean to say that all strings are the same, that's obviously not true. But if a customer asks for Ernie ball super slinkys and we're out I wouldn't think twice about selling them d'addario 9's instead.

Sorry if I'm offending you.

It is not offensive, just completely wrong.

Even the most novice player can hear (and feel) a difference between D'Addario, GHS, and Ernie Ball.

However, if it works for you, have at it.

Re: what strings brand for strat

You really just have to try and see what you like. All trial and error. I cannot recommend Juststrings.com enough for this simply for their prices, selection, no tax, and it's amazing fast and cheap shipping. Really no point in buying strings in stores anymore other than for sheer emergencies, but I buy strings in bulk so there is no chance of that. Juststrings.com's bulk sets are worth trying as well, as I love them (don't even know what brand or anything other than the gauge and that I ordered NW, so no brand-bias) and they are very cheap.

Re: what strings brand for strat

I've been using D'Addario's 10-46 for the last 12 years. I won't touch anything else.

I was pleasantly surprised by them too, but they got gunked up and lifeless really quick on me (strings never do that... I don't have acidic sweat, I guess)... I recently tried Dean Markley Helix and if you like that big, bright, initial power of the Cobalts but don't like the price tag they're worth a try. They've also held up to gigs and practices very well so far. I'm loving them.

Cool thanks for this! Alex Lifeson is using these also...
