What the heck is with guitar manufacturers and thin necks?

Re: What the heck is with guitar manufacturers and thin necks?

The Warmoth 59 roundback is pretty awesome, just throwing that out there.

Re: What the heck is with guitar manufacturers and thin necks?

I dislike super thin "shred" style necks.

I can live with most Fender necks...

the neck on a friend's SG standard is great!

I prefer them to be a little big but not to the point of say, a classical guitar.

Re: What the heck is with guitar manufacturers and thin necks?

I have small hands and love guitars with thin necks .I like my Jackson JDR 94,Charvel XL 650 and Yamaha RGZ. I have a Fender HM strat which by their standard has a thin neck which Greg Howe endorsed It is a touch thicker than the ones I mentioned and as a friend said makes you dig in more.It is all subjective of course and personal prefernce .One could make the assumption there is a demand for guitars with thin necks from the sales of them ,so unless someone compiles a paper on who buys them and their hand measurments it probably comes down to preference .Paul Gilbert has big hands and has played ibanez for years although I hear his signature have fatter necks than some othe ibanez models.

Zombie alert.

BTW, I like medium-sized necks... but "medium" is probably "thick" in today's language.

... that said, I'm the other way around. My MiM Strat's neck is that "Modern C" profile and KILLS my hand every time I play it. I need my necks a good chunk thinner (not Wizard thin but somewhere north of Wizard II) to play comfortably. I guess more people are that way?

Re: What the heck is with guitar manufacturers and thin necks?

I like my wizard II necks
The MIM standard feels a bit thick now

The thinner Ibanez necks took a while to adjust to
But they do feel better to me now

It really is what you've become accustomed to

I played a squire Strat for years
Then the Ibanez

Old thread so I will use an old quote.

To me, the Warmoth 59 is the best neck profile available for me. I love it.

Re: What the heck is with guitar manufacturers and thin necks?

I have smaller hands and hate small necks. I dont buy that small hands need small necks BS. I have hand issues and cannot play small necks at all, but even before that I hated skinny and/or flat necks. IME they have no redeeming qualities in playability or tone. None. But thats just me.

Fyi, my MIM roadworn tele has a pretty big chunky nocaster style neck.

I must have been PMSing that day. That said, I still feel the same. In the meantime I have tried a super skinny les paul classic and a medium skinny es. The es was passable but the classic is good for chords and that is it unless I drop a string guage. Im back to a big mother of a neck on my traditional and love love love it. Big Boy Les Paul Tone. And much less wear and tear on my hands.

I just looked at the date of the OP. lol

I was going to recommend Warmoth, you can get some great sizes there.

My personal preference is wider nut and modern C neck, but I do like the 59 Roundback as well. The only necks I can't stand are the Wizard thin necks.

I would press "like" but you have 777 likes...so I do not want to mess up perfection. lol

Haha, fair enough.

Re: What the heck is with guitar manufacturers and thin necks?

Yes, old thread, but Kudos to Bradley for doing a search as we always complain about new threads being created for the same topic!!

Bradley, I find Charvel necks to be just right. Cant do clubby 59 style necks, but dont like super thin ones either anymore. (wrist aches). Just a couple years ago, I was all about super thin and flat wizard types.. Id like an inexpensive Tele again, but most of those have fatter necks than I prefer. Just keep looking, the right one will come up. Maybe find a model thats a couple years older. Kinda comes in waves..

How does that compare to the 59 necks they put on the Les Paul Traditionals? It took a while to get used to but I love the neck on that guitar.

Re: What the heck is with guitar manufacturers and thin necks?

My preference is the Gibson 60's Slim Taper. It's not really much thinner than the 50's neck in the middle, but it's a much less rounded contour.

Re: What the heck is with guitar manufacturers and thin necks?

I like big necks and I can not lie
You other brothers can't deny
That when a guitar's brought by with a finish in good taste
And a round neck to put through it's paces
You get sprung, wanna pull out your tough
'Cause before you notice that neck is stuffed
Deep in the hands and you're swearing
You're hooked and you can't stop staring

I have not played the LP Traditional neck yet, however, Warmoth's 59 profile is based on Gibson's 50's neck profile. It feels identical to the 2004 Gibson Les Paul Studio profile I used to have.

They say it's a lot like the PRS neck shape, and I love the neck on my Custom 24 so when I do build my Warmoth I'll probably use that profile. Their standard thin just feels TOO think to me. Even my Music Man neck with a 1-5/8ths nut width is about as small as I like to go on the thickness - .835" at the first fret and ".905 at the 12th.

I've found that thickness doesn't affect playability as much as shape does for me. I'll know a neck has been shaped and contoured right if it's a thick neck but I can still get around on it (my hands are on the small side). I typically like C's and Soft V's - shapes without too much shoulder on the side.

I don't mind the feel of most thin necks but I find guitars with thicker necks typically sound better.
