What the hell... (NGD)

So I stopped by my old guitar teacher's house today. Hadn't seen him in probably about two years. He gave me this:

He says that he got it from a friend of his that died recently. All I know was that it was custom made for the guy. My teacher took the neck, but gave me the body for free, so I can't complain. Not that I would - I think it looks awesome in a really crazy kind of way.

A couple of things I have no idea about:

The pickups. Samshin? Not too much info out there, but they seem to be low end Korean made pickups. Anyone ever had any?

The thing in the last picture. It's a three way toggle on top, and it's got a little trimmer on the bottom. Whatever it is, it's active, as there's a 9V battery attached to it. Kinda reminds me of that Black Ice thing, except it's not used like a capacitor.

The Kahler. I've only seen very few in person, and never played one. The bar isn't original, obviously, so anyone know where I could get one? Any idea what model this particular bridge is? I want to find out how to use it, and what all the little hex keys do. Hell, I don't even know how to string it!

Anyone know what kind of wood it is? My guess is Maple, but I know little to nothing about identifying woods.

It'll be a while before I can afford a new neck for this thing, so unfortunately it's going to have to sit around for a bit. I'll probably have to junk the pickups, and I might as well scrap the pickguard and get a new one cut for it with just a master volume and master tone - those pots are way too close together for my liking. I have no idea if I'll keep that weird little switch thing - no idea what it even does.

Re: What the hell... (NGD)

That's great ! I'd measure it to make sure it needs a 25 1/2" scale guitar neck or something different, and work out whether you'll need to use a locking nut. Rewire it to be passive, simple volume and tone, like you say. That could be a great fun little project !

That bar is probably original and quite rare. Forget what it was called, but it's to do that subtle tremolo thing using your palm.
I've got a very similar tremolo on a late 80's Carvin, but not that bar.
The bar I have has a removable end piece that is shaped like a bear claw.

That's a Kahler 2300 series.
The new version is called the 7300.

I want to find out how to use it, and what all the little hex keys do.
Of the three on the bar where the tremolo bar fits, the center one adjusts the spring tension. The outer two adjust the fit of the trem bar.
That's an "ambidextrous" setup. You can unscrew that palm bar and put it on the right side, too.
The rest are for intonation and string height, etc. What I like about this tremolo is you can adjust the string spacing, as well.
It's meant to be used with a locking nut, but it works just as well with locking tuners.
You can adjust it to just about anything from full dive-bomb to locked down.

Hell, I don't even know how to string it!
Just in front of the fine tuners are little slots. The ball end, fits there.

Strung up.

These guys explain it on a new version.
Carvin has info on the stud mounted version.

The Kahlers Carvin carried.

Frankly, I wouldn't even bother with what's left of that body unless you wanted a DIY Steinberger guitar.

If it were me, I'd keep the bridge and figure out the electronics and start over with a body shape I liked.

Good luck!

Re: What the hell... (NGD)

From the string through holes on the back and the filled in posts on the front, that guitar body has gone through a lot.

Honestly, just part it out. You'll put a lot of time into that thing for very little return, unless you just want an odd looking guitar.

Re: What the hell... (NGD)

I've seen those SAMSHIN pickups in some Washburn and Oscar Schmidt guitars. The Washburn 421/423 and 621/623 pickups are all stamped SAMSHIN the bottom. The Oscar Schmidt Delta King that I just sold a few weeks ago had them in it.

Re: What the hell... (NGD)

Well I'm kind of sad to say it, but since I can't see a neck in my future for this guitar, it's up for grabs. I want to keep it, but I'd rather someone else have it that can actually use it.

Still think it's cool as **** though.

Re: What the hell... (NGD)

THAT is half of a Kay Travel guitar.

Re: What the hell... (NGD)

Kam needs to see this. I think he'd dig the **** out of it.

You are correct, sir. And I think it's just positively charming how you crave my approval. ;)

The only thing I don't like is that it's got all that wonderful, easy access to the high frets...and then it's competely ruined by the strap button being right there where your hand goes. Whose bright ****ing idea was that? I'd definitely move the button to one of the bolts holding the neck on.

Other than that, it's pretty awesome. :beerchug:

What's with the block of differently coloured wood at the tail end?
