What to do with a $20 guitar (when it plays TOO good).

Re: What to do with a $20 guitar (when it plays TOO good).

$20?! Wow what a bargain. I'd say do reversible cosmetic things and only improve what actually needs improving (tuners, nut, pots, good fret dressing etc) if everything else is good then your kid will have a nice guitar to learn on!

My first guitar was a Squier Bullet, it had a plywood body and the usual cheap electronics but I loved that thing and it had one of the most comfortable necks I have ever played! I ended up giving it to an ex-girlfriend after she preferred playing the Bullet than playing her Gibson Les Paul! I miss her sometimes...the guitar that is ;)

I hope his son first focuses on getting better at his Englishing and his spelling, before he focuses on his guitaring.

You hit a nerve. I am not joking. That was unnecessary, and I don't see what exactly was wrong.

He was just ribbing you because englishing and guitaring are not words. We wont even go into comma's and other grammatical errors. But dont get your knickers in a twist he was just joshin yah a bit.

I'd greatly appreciate it if you pointed out my mistakes. I don't see where I got my commas wrong. Wait a minute...

Anyway, 'guitaring' is a word, but is slang http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Guitaring. Frankly, it was the only way I could convey what I wanted to in one word, that is, all the aspects of being a guitarist.

Never mind Urban Dictionary... I just couldn't find any other reference, and my point was valid.

To hang with musicians, it's going to take a little thicker skin and ability to take a joke in stride. You should hear some of things we've called each other over the years.

ANd sorry to take your post OT but how do you like the green strings on your Ibby? I kind of want a set of those cause they look kool, but I don't wanna spend the $ if they stink.

LOVE the green strings! Sound good and are smooth and slick. Worth a try! Gonna put blue on the other Ibby eventually.

Thanks for all the comments folks! Tuners and pots are the lowest quality parts on it.

Beau is a great father that understands the importance of an education. I don't think any of us can argue with his logic.

Élite production is one thing, mojo is an another. If it feels great just play the crap out of it. You will never feel guilty after modding the hell out of a cheepo. Sounds to be a fun project with your son.

off:

I hope his son first focuses on getting better at his Englishing and his spelling, before he focuses on his guitaring.

Is Englishing similar to Polishing?

Take it easy. As a non native English speaker, whenever I make some mistake I'll be the loudest to laugh on myself. Cheers man!

Re: What to do with a $20 guitar (when it plays TOO good).

I have a friend who has that exact same guitar in his closet. I told him that he needed to get a better guitar, but if you're saying it plays as good as you're saying, with a nice net-up, cleaning, and string change, it could be decent enough to sound and play good, with definitely a pickup change if necessary. Sounds like a fun project to me.

If not, give it to the kid and let him do all that to it if he ends up having a knack for it. I kinda wish I had my first guitar to mess around and mod with. It was a J. Reynolds Strat copy that played like absolute hell, and didn't really sound all that great, but then again, I was playing through a crappy amp too, so that probably had a lot to do with it. I would've modded the crap out of that thing and made it an awesome strat type of guitar, because now I want a Strat REALLY badly. How Convenient.

Just because it wasn't a joke and it hit a nerve doesn't mean it's not funny.

Re: What to do with a $20 guitar (when it plays TOO good).

Keep it as is and use it to show off your chops.

Nothing embarrasses a cork sniffer worse than when his $5000 custom shop guitar gets beaten by a First Act starter kit guitar.

Nothing but nothing is more fun than listening to a cork sniffer hack up a riff and then blame the 5k guitar and 3k amp at a GC, then plugging in a cheap EPi, setting the knobs, and just playing a few riffs with 'tude and going "Nah - works for me. Must be something else."

And I say for $20, I would not be afraid to experiment with a chainsaw and an arc welder as mod tools!

Play the bejeebers out of it and mod away. Let the kid buy his own guitar.

PS - I use yellow strings. They last a while and feel ok. The tone? meh.

Beau, Letus, take it to PM's.
