What to load in a Tele HH?

I have a new Am Dlx Tele HH loaded with DFH-1 Fender humbuckers. The p/ups sound good in the middle position with the S-1 switch (coil split) up or down. However, in the neck position the sound is too muddy with the S-1 switch in either position.

I have been thinking of loading this guitar with a Jazz in the neck and a Pearly Gates in the bridge in order to give me a guitar with moderate output, good clean tone and good overdrive crunch.

I am second guitar (usually rhythm with the occasional lead) in a band playing 60's to 90's pop/rock, so I need a versatile wide-range set up. Will this combination of p/ups work for this application?

Thanks!

Jazz neck and PG bridge...you might find that the neck pickup has a little more bass than you need compared to the PG bridge pickup. When you turn the amp's bass control down to clear up the neck pickup you'll also remove bass from the bridge pickup and that might make the PG B sound thin and bright. I would go with a full set of PG's instead. Or a Jazz/JB or Jazz/59B set. Lew

couldn't have said it better myself. the jazz can get quite bassy so you just have to watch out for that, not muddy by any means though. i think the Jazz/'59b combo would work great

I have a Yamaha dual hum Tele with a pair of DiMarzio Virtual PAFs. They make a great sounding, non-muddy, versitile combo, and they sound great split too.

I have an identical guitar that I'm planning to put Duncans in, but I haven't decided which ones yet.

Re: What to load in a Tele HH?

I have a '59b/PGn combo on my Telegib and it's a real wonder !

Plus, the '59 is a 4 wires one so I have split possibilities that are great.

The '59 and the PG combined are sweet !

Re: What to load in a Tele HH?

I have the opposite combo in a Les Paul (59n/PGb), and I'm not liking it so much anymore. The pickups sound great individually and in the middle position with both on, but it's hard to find an eq setting on my amp that sounds good with both pickups. If I eq for the 59n, the PGb sounds thin and too bright. If I eq for the PGb, the 59n sounds too bassy and muddy.

I think I'm going to put the 59 (w/maybe a Custom bridge) in another Les Paul and then get a PGn for this one.

The 59b/PGn combo may be a good one, though. Having the bassier pickup in the bridge might solve the eq problems.

I think I'm gonna install a set of PG's in this Tele, then - sounds like that will give me some clarity and crunch

I'll let you know how it works out

Re: What to load in a Tele HH?

After installing a Phat Cat and JD in an ash Tele, I have been thinking about putting a pair of Phat Cats in an HH Tele or Strat. However, if you want a bridge humbucker (or more likely a trembucker), then you might consider one paired with a Phat Cat at the neck. The eq of the PC is very fat and clear without any mud, and should match well with an A2 mag pickup in the bridge, perhaps the PG or a Custom Custom.
