What to Put in my Tele bridge (?)

I’m pulling a double coil in the neck position of a Tele. The body is Alder and the fretboard is maple. I’m hoping to use it for open tuning slide work. I’ve pretty much decided on a Pearly Gates (or possibly the Alnico II Pro). My question is what to put in the bridge position.

Stacked double coils don’t seem to have the output to match up with a PG. And neither do most of the single coils. Anybody have any ideas?

P.S. I will probably use stacked pots so I’ll have separate Vol and Tone for each pickup. This should make up for some disparity in output levels.

Re: What to Put in my Tele bridge (?)

I'd go for a Jerry Donahue. Great sounding and ballsy pickup.

Re: What to Put in my Tele bridge (?)

I am using an antiquity neck hb (7.50K) with a JD (7.80K) as Mr. Lew the Master of the "Nurky" tone suggested. :lmao: :burnout:

JD is a great pickup, especially for bright teles. Mine has hardash body and maple neck. And the steel saddles don't help to get a darker tone. But JD/ant neck hb sounds excellent. Could not be happier.

And you, Dr. B, are the undisputed master of the Turkey Tone! :laugh2:

"Turkey Nurky" ...
sounds like a band

I agree with the choices, too. :)

Re: What to Put in my Tele bridge (?)

Thanks "Nurk" and "Turk." I hadn't even considered the JD, so I'm glad I asked.
It sounds like an excellent choice.

I like the custom shop BG-1400. It has good output, lots of twang and glass. It keeps up with a neck humbucker pretty well also. I can't say the same about other tele bridge pickups that I have used.
It's also noisless :)

Re: What to Put in my Tele bridge (?)

Skh515, sure don't mention it.

Stevo: I don't have any output issues regarding the JD bridge (that also includes fralin blues sp., SD broadcaster, and RG muy grande) and the neck hb's (tried a PGn, 59, 59 with an a3, A2p and finally ant neck) I have tried so far. I am sure that you are hearing things right on, no problems there. But wonder then why is that happening? The wood?

Re: What to Put in my Tele bridge (?)

The tele I mentioned is swamp ash with a solid maple neck, and 3 saddle bridge. I don't think I have any problems with the guitar.
Evan has a BG-1400 in his tele too. I am sure that the JD and the Broadcaster are great pickups also. I have not tried them in any of my teles.

Re: What to Put in my Tele bridge (?)

Another vote for the JD-Sounds fantastic for a variety of styles-excellent cleans, and as Lew said, it's got plenty of guts for the harder stuff. I've got a friend's strat w/JB the bridge and although this is not an apples to apples comparasin, I really miss my Tele...so do my band mates.

...and so does my wife, but that might be more due to the Floyd Rose in the strat than anything else...Bombs away!!!

Re: What to Put in my Tele bridge (?)

I too like the JD in the bridge of my Tele. It keeps up very well wtih the SM-1 I have at the neck.

Re: What to Put in my Tele bridge (?)

I have a JD lead paired with a Phat Cat neck pickup in an ash American Series Tele, and it's a great combo. If you raise the JD up close to the strings, it will keep up with the Phat Cat, especially as you crank the amp up.
