What Tube Screamer is your favorite?

There are a ton of permutations of this pedal, and I have had a TS9DX for a long while now. I've modded it a bit, the most recent switching the opamp from the no-name 4558 in it to the Texas Instruments one, installed in a socket so's I can change it later if I feel the need. The other mod was changing the capacitors on the mode switch, because any of the other modes above "+" was SUPER BASSY. The capacitor change was very nice, but the biggest change came from the opamp change. The regular TS9 mode is perfect now, whereas it was entirely too thin before. Can't wait to play it with the band this week.

I've got an old MIJ TS9, I tested it back to back with a TS9DX and they sound quite a bit different regardless of the settings. I didn't like the DX at all. I don't know if it's any different than the newer TS9's.

The DX I have is a Maxon built one, so I am not sure how much it differs from the Ibanez built ones.

Re: What Tube Screamer is your favorite?

As a general rule I'm not a Tubescreamer guy but when I need that sound I have an AnalogMan modded TS-9 that has the classic/808 and brown mods as well as a kool yellow LED and the KWS chassis mods.

I've also got a Fulldrive 2 MOSFET thats cool for hot rodded TS style tones with more options.

I've considered picking up a Green Rhino because I love the Way Huge stuff and the 100Hz control is a GREAT addition to a TS but I'm not sure if I'd really use it enough to justify it.

I wasn't looking for one but I got a Rhino in a trade a while back and I really dig it. The knob comes in real handy for playing really quiet late at night, just kinda helps fill out the sound. I like it in front of the Butcher quite a bit too. I haven't tried it in front of the MarkIII yet, but I really like the MXR OD for that amp.

Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive

I use it as either a light OD or a Clean Boost to thicken up the Rectifier and give it a boost to the mids. It's probably not the best on the market, however I really like it for the role it plays in my sound. A word of caution, the clean/dirty blend is a joke. The feel and sound it produces basically feels like watered down overdrive. Either have that pot set to completely clean, or completely dirty.

I'm kind of glad I found this pedal 6-7 years ago b/c if I had to go OD shopping now my head would explode. Too many choices and I hate going through 20 different pedals just to find the right one (especially when you don't live anywhere close to places where you could try one).

Re: What Tube Screamer is your favorite?

I played a Paisley Drive on Black Friday and was blown away by it. I don't know that I played it enough to call it my favorite, but it will hopefully find its way onto my board in the next year or so. Out of the ones that I have more than just 15 minutes of playing with (I've owned stock a TS9, ZW-OD, and a MXR Custom Badass Modified Overdrive.) I've also spent a fair amount of time with a vintage TS808 that a buddy owns. Out of those, I liked the Custom Badass the best. There's a lot of versatility there, with the mid-BUMP switch and the 100Hz knob, it seems pretty close to the Rhino. It can be thin and gritty or thick and creamy with a few simple adjustments. It works equally well with my Gretsch and my Strat.

Well, I do love that George Lynch Malaysian chip TS808 it has hairy but fluid texture that I just love ....

Call me kooky, call me wacky, but I realized that I don't really like Tube Screamers.

Re: What Tube Screamer is your favorite?

I like my Visual Sound Double Trouble but my axes are sounding a lot different to me to me today.

Re: What Tube Screamer is your favorite?

The other guitarist in my band has a Keeley modded TS9. I like it enough to the point I'm heavily considering getting my own, but maybe the 808 modded instead.

Some people don't. I took some time for me to get used to it and fit it into my sound. But now, I use it all the time for my medium/low gain stuff.

Re: What Tube Screamer is your favorite?

A Behringer TO800 because, it's green, made of plastic, is the only TS type I've ever tried, and it lives unused in a drawer...

EDIT: Perhaps it's time I gave it a go again...

Re: What Tube Screamer is your favorite?

My search for a tubescreamer ended with me buying a TS-7 from Guitar Center for $30 and changing a few resistors to make it TS808 specs. I have no idea if it really sounds like a TS808 but it sounds good to my ears. I still need to try the Paisley Drive and Green Rhino though.
