What type of guitarist are you?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

A really crappy one! :D

I'm not much of a lead player. Short fingers, plus I've got a slight birth defect in my pinkies that keeps me from having the spread I would normally have. Makes it tough for me. But I've always wanted more than anything to be able to shred at will or scale it back. Just like all my heroes. :sigh:

Then again, I would be perfectly happy being more of a slow-hand with serious explosiveness and power vs. the speed/shred..like an Adrian Smith or an Angus Young (I realize they both have good speed, but compared to the "shredders" they are slow, relatively speaking)

I tend to play alot of riffs vs. chord stuff in my rhythm playing.

Re: What type of guitarist are you?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

i just play what i need to play. since i am not in a band, everytime i write a song i have to play and or record both parts, if there are two parts. so i am a bit of both

Re: What type of guitarist are you?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

Rhythm.

I can solo, but I'd rather be the guy on the side of the stage chugging away at chords. I really like being tight, and I try my best to give the lead a big pocket to play in.

Re: What type of guitarist are you?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

im a bit of both really, i play a LOT of lead stuff because i wanna get better but playing some nice chords and rhythms or just chugging away can be equally satisfying, and i also find fancy rhythm work and spicey chords tend to impress me a lot more than fretboard wanking at 200nps. though i do like playing really fast lead i also love to play some nice chords ( little wing - Hendrix <3)

Re: What type of guitarist are you?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

I didn't read the posts and I won't vote in the poll. A good guitarist should be able to do both, no matter what your role in the band/session/ etc. is. I love playing solos, I love playing rythym, I love acoustic sounds, I love insane metal sounds....I just love playing guitar! To answer your question though, I'm simply, a guitarist. :)

Both. I think rhythm gives you incredible scope for creativity, much more than just strumming the chords. It's great trying to see what different ideas you can come up with in the context of a song.

Re: What type of guitarist are you?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

i am a bad guitar player. Guitar is not my main instrument. I mainly play classical music (violin/viola). So my skills consist of reading music and playing what and when people want me to in a group. I am just now starting to learn how to make my own leads and such.

Re: What type of guitarist are you?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

Voted both. I play rhythm 90% of the time as a single axeman but I can shoot a lick or two here and there. Anyway, I'm rather on the rhythm side because considering songs rhythm playing means the solid brick that the whole house is built upon so for me good rhíthm playing is 10 times more important than soloing.

Re: What type of guitarist are you?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

I think it is important for any guitarist to be adept at both rhythm and lead. I am always the only guitarist in the bands I'm in so I have to be able to lock in with the rhythm section and comp chords and fills and step forward and solo when that's required.

Ok Guys im curious what type of guitar player are you? Are you what we would consider a rhythm guitar player or a lead guitar player?

Also give your reason why.

Me i am more of a rhythm player for many reasons, mainly because i liek music that deals with more chord progressions rather than guitar solos. Also i really lliek playing chords and right now im leanring as much as i can in terms of chords and how to form them, inversions, open tuning chords etc. If i ever play lead, its really bad, i can only do minor solos or riffs no face melting solos for me.

I'm a bit of both types. I strive for a mix, I LOVE playing lead, and try to do so as melodically as I can, super-speed shredding just doesn't do it for me, and I also enjoy rhythm/chordal playing, especialy beig able to come up with rich sometimes unusual and mysterious sounding chords or combining chords in different ways. Even though I not very adept at it, sometimes I enjoy at least attempting chord-melody playing. As my chordal playing goes, I enjoy arpeggiated things and fingerpicking as well as plucking all the strings at once and fading it in with a vol pedal, as well as some get-down funky rhtyhm.

Re: What type of guitarist are you?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

I much prefer to play lead guitar but when i'm playing in a band situation I always take more rythem than lead stuff... even if I do take afew solos aswell, so I voted a bit of both.

Re: What type of guitarist are you?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

I see many people over here think of shredding as something in the likes of
Kirk Hammet who, when James goes: "Solo!", he just does a scale up and down as fast as he can (in my opinion), but when i think of it is more like a fast melodic passage whithin a solo (depending on the feeling and how it fits the song), or a full one, not jus scale workout up and down. A good example for it would be "Locomotive" with Guns 'n Roses. It melted my face when i first heard it.

Re: What type of guitarist are you?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

Both, only guitar player in a Rock N Roll band means you do it all. I consider myself a far more efficient rhythm player.

Re: What type of guitarist are you?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

Did you ever wonder why nobody ever asks keyboard players if they play "lead" or "rhythm" keyboards? :sigh:

Re: What type of guitarist are you?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

Both, but my leads are usually more textural and avant garde, i do let rip sometimes though. Rhythm and groove is where im really at. And silly noises of course.

Re: What type of guitarist are you?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

I am a hacker...or is that slacker?

I most enjoy playing lead fills. Not solos, fills.

I play what is required at the time, though.

Re: What type of guitarist are you?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

Both. It depends what I am doing, really.
