a friend of mine recorded himself playing drums w/ a cassette deck, then played along to that w/ a bass turned down really quiet and recorded it on another tape deck, then played that tape while singing and playing guitar quietly, and recorded it on the first deck.

I don't know if you'd count this one...

Years ago I was producing a record for one band that decided they wanted to put car sounds on one song, the usual stuff like reving engines & horns. So we all headed out to the parking lot & started up our cars, but rather then grabbing a microphone or two from the studios collection & running a couple hundred feet of cable I grabbed a microcassette recorder and stuck it on the fence. Let tape roll for about 5 or 10 minutes outside, then brought it back inside the studio and stuck a microphone on the recorders speaker to "play" the car sounds onto the multi-track.

this POS mic....

....duct taped to the top of a 2 liter soda bottle to get it at the same height as my amp's speakers, and then into the computer.

Came out fine, good enough for the purposes of makin' an indie record.

Really it's just a sound effect. IME it always seems easier to actually just make whatever's needed for a tune rather then digging through sample library's and maybe paying a licensing fee on top of it. At the very least we're using original sounds and IMNSHO that's always cooler then using some canned preset.

Like a year or two ago I needed carnival sounds for a record so I called up my girlfriend & she put me in touch with one of her friends who's boyfriend was a fireman & they were both working at the towns annual Firemans Festival. We arranged a time & I went down there & pimped power off the game booth he was working at, hung a bunch of a microphones all over the place and recorded about 45 minutes of real carnival atmosphere. I was walking around eatin' fried dough & makin' a rekkid at the same time!

Life should always be that kind of fun!

Re: what was the "ghettosist" way of recording u ever did?

There's an inbuilt mic in my cassette player, I set that to record and put it somewhere in my room and played through my amp. The funniest part was you couldn't see anywhere on the casette player where a microphone would be! That was my laziest solution, or just a quick crappy recording of a riff in case *god forbid* that I forgot it.

I just recorded something with my 7 dollar internet mic, with overdubs and all, into Windows Sound Recorder.

Had to stop every 60 seconds to start recording again :smack:

And it actually came out good! :laugh2:
