What was the original purpose of the truss rod and what does it do by adjusting it?

Re: What was the original purpose of the truss rod and what does it do by adjusting i

Its used to combat the tension of the strings on the neck. It stops the string from bowing the neck. You want tge truss rod to keep the neck almost perfectly straight with just a microscopic amount of relief. Back bow is no bueno and too much relief is no beuno. Dont mess with it if you dont know how to properly adjust it though. You can trash a guitar very easily with that bad boy truss rod

Thanks for the reply,

Also, could I buy a set of allen keys that would be able to fit the truss rod slot AND the saddle slots that adjust the action?

Absolutely you could. A lot of guitars require different sizes so look that up before spending any money. Most saddles juse use a standard flat head screwdriver. At least they do on my SG's

The very first Telecasters, called Esquires, didn't have a truss rod & people soon realized that this was a major design flaw! Pretty much all necks, regardless of the materials used to make them, move due to humidity content in the air, changing temperatures, string tension & age, Etc. So having the ability to straighten them or add relief greatly improved the playability, especially over time!!!!

Usually, new guitars come with the right wrenches to adjust things like the truss rod and bridge saddles. If you have several guitars, it is worth buying both a standard (US) set and metric set of wrenches- the size you'll need is bound to go in there. As far as adjustments to your guitar, I highly recommend this book.

Does anyone know what size allen key I would need to adjust the action at the bridge? I know they are teeny tiny but I don't the exact size and I don't want to buy the wrong size.

I think I might have lost them so i need a replacement :(

Re: What was the original purpose of the truss rod and what does it do by adjusting i

it depends on the bridge you have on the guitar. i have at least three different ones for my guitars

I give a very strong +1 to the book Mincer recommended, Dan Erlewine's "How To Make Your Electric Guitar Play Great". Every electric guitar player should own a copy. No foolin'.

P.S. - I just noticed it's into a 2nd Edition. I might need to upgrade.

Yeah, it's there to stabilize the neck and combat string tension to keep the neck straight. They aren't always adjustable. Martin didn't switch to adjustable versions in the 80s or so. Modulus basses didn't have them at first either. Boutique brand, Vigier, doesn't use adjustable truss rods.

A note of caution on trussrods....this is something to read up on before attempting an adjustment. It doesn't work like your bridge adjusting screw. You are changing the way wood is bent, and the natural material takes time to bow or relax.

Yes, you actually can do damage to your guitar forever if you don't adjust it properly. There is a lot of info out there explaining how it works, and why you have to be careful (also, be sure you need to do it).

I do have a question about your phrasing... You say "original purpose" as if its intended purpose and what it ended up being used for are two different things.
