What was your first Duncan?

Re: What was your first Duncan?

A Custom Custom and a JazzN. They've lived in my Yamaha MSG since around 91/92 time.

Every time someone posts one of those Yammy's, I want one. ;)

Anyway, my first set of Duncans was the forum recommended C5/59n combo. Put them in my MIA Peavey Predator.

(Lousy pic, from my 1st digital camera. 850k pixels. Yes, that's "k".)

Sold them to try new things, but now I have 'em back. Just haven't gotten around to putting them back yet.

Re: What was your first Duncan?

A2P Slash. That's when I discovered the difference between Duncans and low budget pickups. The clarity, detail and definition are just unbelievable.

Re: What was your first Duncan?

A JB. My second guitar after a Squier strat was a Jackson DK2. I wanted a Jackson because they were cool. I also was clueless about guitars - that's not to say that the guitars or the guitar in question are in any way bad, they're nice. Anyway, after trying out the V models I decided to check out all the affordable jacksons in the shop and bought the one that played and sounded best to me. I'm really surprised that I was that clever as a teenager. Later on, I found out that I couldn't get a tone thick, warm and aggressive enough with the stock HB102. So I listened to all the SD clips in the store on a cd and immediately fell in love with the JB. I didn't know at the time, that the HB102 was actually based on the JB. I don't know how much the difference between the pickups was the guitar setup, but the pickup immediately made a difference that I couldn't get with my amp or my GT3.

These days the JB sits in the closet waiting for a guitar to go in. I still own the DK2, which I play rarely, and which has a BKP C-pig in it. I still love the JB.

A Hot Rails for Strat. I wasn't really liking the stock bridge pickup on my '95 MIM Strat and that was the first pickup suggested based on what I wanted. I think someone one the Guitar World message board at the time recommended it to me.

Re: What was your first Duncan?

1984..ish, maybe 85. Custom and a 59.

around '88 for me, but same set, in a '79 LP Custom. The Duncan Custom didn't last long, replaced it with a PGb and that's been there ever since. I have Duncans in most of my LPs. Just a matter of time until they all have Duncans.

Re: What was your first Duncan?

My first duncans were a JB and Jazz that were in this lower end schecter I bought used. Best basswood tone I've had for a bridge pup. Never really got along with the jazz.

Re: What was your first Duncan?

First was an Sh-1b in an Ibanez GRX20, it eventually made its way in to an Epi SG Korina and sounded cool, but it was replaced with a Screamin Demon and it brought the guitar to a whole new level.

Re: What was your first Duncan?

In 1998 the Duncan catalog wasn't as big as it is now. I had no idea about aftermarket pickups until my co-workers at Sam Ash told me. I started out answering phones, and checking things in/out of the store. I asked our store luthier what pickups I should put in my guitar and he said 59/JB. I put them in a Cort made archtop. Looking back, the JB wasn't the best for that guitar, but the 59 has been great. I later changed out the JB for a Duncan Distortion, and it sounds great. Now I know I will get a lot of flack for putting a Distortion in an archtop, but it helps fill in the mids and sings nicely.
