I would guess it has an air gap in the neck pocket
This has been the death of sustain in many of mine

Good contact across the heel is important

A friend of mine shims his necks allot to get em low he has that problem

Then it may be a poorly cut nut

Loose bridge

Raise the action a bit
That will kill sustain too

put your strat neck on it to see if it's the neck or the body. if it still doesn't sing with the strat neck, then get a replacement body. If it does sing, get a new neck.

Do the MIM teles have strat shaped neck heels?

Dude, I have three guitars like this.

Two were gifts from my wife, one was the first guitar I ever bought.

As you know, hard to sell those because of sentimental strings.

I have no help to offer, just that I understand.

Sand all the finish off and use very thin refinish. Wudtone comes to mind.

EMGs, as they're not picky at all about what guitar you throw them in (they do get criticized by some people for sounding the same in every guitar after all). I'm actually a little surprised you haven't thought of them already.

I'd also check bridge/nut/neck pocket.

You know, I was thinking the same thing about the EMG's, but you got to post it first. Anyway, some sort of actives might be your best bet. Dragonfire and TNT Guitars makes overseas copies of EMG's. Of course, you can always go with some Seymour Duncan's right? Blackouts or Livewires could make your guitar a lot of fun.

I wouldn't go with Dragonfire, just because actual EMGs can be had used for the same price. I actually wouldn't mind selling an 81 I have to Andrew for cheap.

I've had good luck with TNT guitar pickups. The humbuckers go for $35 a piece. If the original poster can find EMG pickups for that, then I would of course tell him to go for it. However, I don't think he will find them for that price. Good luck if he can.

I would change the tremolo, block and all to something of better quality (steel or brass), change the neck to something better or at least something you feel is better along with the tuners, and upgrade the electronics as well. I was given a MIJ telecaster by a friend not to long ago and something wasn't right, so I did all of these things starting with the most affordable mods to the more expensive until I was happy. I kept the telecaster stock looking (and kept all of the stock parts) just in case my buddy stopped by and happen to ask to see it, that way everyone is happy.
