What would you do

On my local Craigslist there is a Marshall mg100hdfx head and matching 4x12 cab up for sale, 150$ in mint condition. Would you buy it? If not, how come?

Re: What would you do

If I needed the vol yes I would snatch it up real quick and maybe even swap the speakers with some WGS speakers. My practice and small gig amp is a Marshall MG30FX so I wouldn't have a problem getting the head and cab sounding to my liking.

Re: What would you do

Would I? No, because I have 3 amps far better than it. But you might not, so if you want it go for it. Idk what they go for at all to know if that's a deal though.

If you didn't have the orange then I'd say pick it up, but it definitely isn't as good. Might be worth it for the cab alone

NOPE . . . my first amp was an MG15.

I still have nightmares about that series.

If it was something like an old Valvestate 8080, or head n cab, then i might think about it, because those can get you a real nasty punk rock meets Pantera (in a good way) kind sound.

But NOT an MG-anything . . . no matter what the watts.

my 2cents

Would it be worth it to grab and sell for a little higher? Or use it for trading?
Nah, buy it for the cab and then find a decent tube head. Keep the MG around as backup or trade fodder for a pedal, or sell to GC.

Re: What would you do

Do you have an amp.?
The MG series, especially a used one, is a throw away item. Just keep that in mind.
Good Quality 4x12 cabs are at an all time low right now. I am taking about the used market of course.
But you can get a well made 4x12 with Good Speakers for 300-500 dollars.

That cab will be MDF or cheaper. Many high quality home stereo cab are made of MDF...but they get moved about 3 feet every decade. Those cabs will not hold up well to real gigging.
The speakers in that cab will be (again) entry level units.
If you needed an amp for teaching students...an extra in a studio...extra for a friend to plug into when they come to your house...yeah, it would be fine.
It really depends on what YOU are going to do with it.
You can see what the general consensus is on The Forum.
What could you buy if you saved the 150, and another 150.? There are some great things available for 300 bux.
Hell, there are some great things available for 150.
This may or may not be a good deal...just depends on why you want it.
good luck

Re: What would you do

Nothing so amaze balls about that to buy just because it is a buck fifty.

What do you want need it for if anything?. I mean - yeah, cab to re-speaker, back up for the main thing, beater amp/cab you can practice with, whatever….

Unless you have a reason, cheap is not enough.

Re: What would you do

My main reasoning to maybe grab it is my orange tiny terror is missing a lot of low end sound. There isn't a lot of bass. And this marshall would be great for some metal sounds, heavy chug, that's all. Other than that, I've got no real reason. I don't need the volume, or the size really

Re: What would you do

I once heard a metal shredder playing through a Marshall MG and his technique and note selection was so good that his tone even sounded pretty good. I think when modelers and solid state is used on recordings that peoples' ears eventually pick up on it and the music loses some appeal. However, sometimes they have their place. Live playing and practice is pretty acceptable for the MG, and if you think it's a good deal then jump on it. I have to warn you though that the cab is partical board crap and the speakers suck, but you don't buy that rig for authentic tone anyway so no problem.

Re: What would you do

Well, to end the story, the man backed out on my deal and sold to someone else. Moral of the story, people on Craigslist can really suck. Thanks for all the input guys!

There's good tone in just about any amp, it's up to the user to unlock it.

I've got one of those MGs, and it's decent enough. $150 would have been worth it, as you could have gotten your money back easily if you decided to sell it.
