What would you pay for a 1981 Super Reverb?

Local shop has one. 1981 is the last year the SF circuit was used. The guy in the store said it was "all original", and he appears to be correct (I'm not sure when the 3-prong plug was introduced, but it seems reasonable that a 1981 amp would have one).

Condition: some tolex wear and a bit of grime, but everything is intact. Basically what you would expect from an amp that age that's been played out.

Post a guess, then I'll tell you what they want for it.

I'd go as high as probably $650, but wouldn't even consider it past that point, and to me that's even a bit high when only for a bill or two more I could get an early 70's silverface

$500 or $600 or so. But I wouldn't even pay that...I wouldn't want one. I like the '74 model a lot better, and it's a great platform for mods and for turning into a killer blackface style Super.

I'm going to guess $700 to $800 Canadian

I was just offered $1300.00 Canadian for my '67 Super Reverb (player's amp...in not too bad shape)

Are you sure they made them in the early 80's?

I would end up ripping it apart and making into a BF model with Mercury magnetics transformers.

Some of those master volume Fenders appear as if they'd be cool, then you plug in, and realize a Hotrod Deville sounds better.

Re: What would you pay for a 1981 Super Reverb?

When I went in there, the guy said "We're asking 2"

I said "I hope you mean two hundred"

He said "Two thousand"

I said "Good luck with that," and left.

"We're asking 2"

I'll bet that he'll be saying that phrase for a while.

ahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahaha.

Yeah. No. He's never gonna sell that thing.

Re: What would you pay for a 1981 Super Reverb?

The vintage market confounds me sometimes....

Asking two....good luck. Raise both hands...give him two middle-fingers and then tell him to load it into your car.

Re: What would you pay for a 1981 Super Reverb?

I would pay you $400-$500 to take it out and dump it in a lake.

Re: What would you pay for a 1981 Super Reverb?

The real tragedy here is that soem poor sod that shows up at the shop every so often is going to plug into it and the owner is going to just pour on the sales routine. It'll be some guy that shows up every few months and buys something big and doesn't really know much about tone and the owner will see him coming from a mile away.

...these people exist. I played in a band with one. He had a pedal board that looked like a flight controllers desk and barely knew how to run half the pedals he had on there. He would basically show up every few months and the owner of the shop would tell him what great thing he should have and he would buy it.

And that's what is going to happen with this amp...tragic as it actually is.

You are so right....it happens all the time.

That Freddie King Album (in your avatar) is one of my favorites. He just gets killer tone on that record! Freddie King is the MAN!!!!! (off topic sorry)

I would not buy a Fender Super Reverb beyond the mid 70's. As Lew stated earlier the early late 60's early 70's are a much better amp. You will pay a little more, but you will have an amp that will sound great. I would recommend getting a non Master volume SF. About $1000.00 for one in decent shape.
