I've got a guitar with an unusual setup that I'm looking for some pickups for - an Epiphone Les Paul pro/fx.
It's a Les Paul - 24.75" scale, mahogany body, mahogany neck, rosewood fretboard, 22 frets.
But, since it's an Epiphone, the body is almost all mahogany (There's a very thin maple veneer on top). It's also got a locking nut and a Floyd Rose
It's an odd combination of factors and I'm a little stumped on how to choose pickups for it. Normally with a Les Paul, I'd be all about pickups that are on the bright side with a lot of clarity and definition. But the Floyd throws a kink in things. I think I need something with more low end and body to compensate, but I don't want it to get boomy with the all mahogany and short scale.
In spite of the setup, I don't want a total metal sound. I want versatility. I need this guitar to be as much of a tonal chameleon as possible. I want to be able to go from the Van Halen thing in one song, to an old school R&B groove in the next.
I'm thinking something in the PAF camp that is warm enough to compensate for the bridge, but not too warm, and has enough output to give me back some sustain.
What do you think?
