What would you put in this guitar?

I've got a guitar with an unusual setup that I'm looking for some pickups for - an Epiphone Les Paul pro/fx.

It's a Les Paul - 24.75" scale, mahogany body, mahogany neck, rosewood fretboard, 22 frets.

But, since it's an Epiphone, the body is almost all mahogany (There's a very thin maple veneer on top). It's also got a locking nut and a Floyd Rose

It's an odd combination of factors and I'm a little stumped on how to choose pickups for it. Normally with a Les Paul, I'd be all about pickups that are on the bright side with a lot of clarity and definition. But the Floyd throws a kink in things. I think I need something with more low end and body to compensate, but I don't want it to get boomy with the all mahogany and short scale.

In spite of the setup, I don't want a total metal sound. I want versatility. I need this guitar to be as much of a tonal chameleon as possible. I want to be able to go from the Van Halen thing in one song, to an old school R&B groove in the next.

I'm thinking something in the PAF camp that is warm enough to compensate for the bridge, but not too warm, and has enough output to give me back some sustain.

What do you think?

The short scale makes a huge difference

I think the JB or the Custom would do pretty well here.

If you want a slightly less focused sound there's the Custom 5 which has less of a upper mid bump

If you want more medium output checkout the dimarzio at-1 and the air zone

I'd opt for a Custom/Jazz setup. The big slab of mahogany and short scale seems like the it would work with these pickups. Also, listen to the guitar unplugged...what frequencies do you want to come out more? What aspects of the current pickups do you want to change?

Re: What would you put in this guitar?

Sorry I lost track of this thread I made.

I shouldn't have mentioned Van Halen! haha

I meant something that would be versatile enough to handle that in a pinch, but not too focused in that direction. Mostly, I want good versatility

Right now the guitar has those atrocious old Epiphone humbuckers in it (not the probuckers). I forgot how absolutely horrendous those pickups sound. The guitar right now is muddy, unresponsive, and has no clarity or definition at all. It's so dark and muddy it's tempting me to put a set of Pearly Gates or Full Shred in there to see if I can liven it up a bit.

I'm not convinced that the A2P would be a good fit. I'm also not so sure about the JB or Custom. I think this guitar really needs something with a lot of harmonic character to bring it to life; I'm worried that anything too high output will be too focused in an already too focused sounding guitar

How can it be "dark and muddy" at the same time as being "already too focused"?

I'd probably go regular Custom from SD since you don't want metal-focus only, for which I'd say Dimebucker.

Re: What would you put in this guitar?

I'd recommend a custom trembucker for the bridge slot. The Custom 5 should be too midscooped (but if you like it, get it). For the neck position jazz or sentient. If you want something else a couple of dimarzio classic paf.

If it were me I would go with a Screamin' Demon/59 combo. The Demon is a great med output pickup contrary to what the name implies, which is great for versatility.

when a store was blowing these out a few years back, I grabbed a few of them. both needed the nuts lowered and putting some German Floyds on them went a long way. going through several pickup options, it was finally the Seth Lover set. much more versatile set than some expect and it addresses a lot of the boom inherent to the guitar.

knowing how the Seth set responds on that guitar, I've been meaning to put my CS Angus Young set in the other one.

Re: What would you put in this guitar?

I have an Epi LP that was too dark sounding. I tried the Seth Lovers, but they were lacking balls for my taste. A 59/Custom Hybrid bridge made it the best sounding guitar (with an uncovered Whole Lotta Humbucker on the neck).
In an Gibson LP that I have that had the opposite problem, with a set of 57 classic and 57+, the bridge was too harsh on the treble. I put a set of Whole Lotta Humbuckers and it is awsome right now (the neck pickup has the nickel cover).
Funny enough, the Epi was too dark, the Gibson was too harsh on the treble, and now both of them sounds quite close to each other, both of them perfectly balanced and with the righ amount of power for going into metal when needed and enough clarity for good cleans as well.
