What year JB?

I've got this old JB laying around that came out of my 1994 Hamer Special (along with the '59 which I sold). I believe it's original to the guitar. It's a JBG which I believe means it was wound by Gloria Ocompo. Any idea of approximate year?

Re: What year JB?

That is for sure a pre 2002 model. Outside of that it gets more difficult to nail down an exact date. That specific baseplate with the "Made in the USA" came into use sometime in the 80's, IIRC. What I can't recall is if it was 83' or 87'. Those dates stick in my mind, but may be a complete random artifact of my memory.

Since they came out of a 94' Hammer, it's reasonable to assume they're a 93' or 94' model year production. Duncan was an OEM manufacturer of pickups for Hamer for many years. Duncan probably makes more JB's, Jazz(n) and 59's than any other pickups, but they still don't likely have thousands sitting in inventory at any given time collecting dust; hundreds is far more likely. My point here is that it's not likely that a 91' or 92' model sat around for 2-3 years waiting to be put in your guitar. Of course, SD probably bulk shipped pickups to Hamer and who knows how they handled their inventory.

The answer is still the same....there is not a way I know of to date that pickup any more precisely. It's most likely a 92-94 JB, and you have the winder correct. Someone from SD might be able to narrow it down further based on the baseplate and font on the sticker, if you really wanted to pursue it.

It's a good pickup.

Thanks, guys. I always tend to rip JBs out of guitars and replace them. They're okay, but I find them a bit overrated. I might just keep this one and eventually use it in a project I need to finish up.
