i hav a marshall mg50dfx and idk i think i want to sell it. whats a real nice heavy metal amp in the 300-500dollar range

Re: whats a good heavy metal amp

You looking for solid state or tube? Musicians Friend has a deal on an all tube Peavey Windsor half stack for 400 bucks, but you'd probably have to stick a good pedal in front of it to get it into metal territory. The other good options are Randall SS stuff.

Re: whats a good heavy metal amp

once in a while you can find deals on 5150 combos in that price range!

Re: whats a good heavy metal amp

im not selling rite now. and idk if i will if i had the money to buy my own amp, my parents wudnt let me any way unless i had a kick a** reason so not for sale rite now

Re: whats a good heavy metal amp

it's going to be hard to get something decent unless you're going to pay between 500 - 700. If you're looking for a head look for a used peavey 5150 or classic series. Laney makes some nice amps that you can find for pretty cheap once and a while, the aor 50 I've seen come up cheap as well as the GH 50L. When you get the money just start looking on craigslist and ebay, that's where you'll probably get the best deal. I got a 5150 combo for 300 bucks on craigslist

Re: whats a good heavy metal amp

It depends on what kinda metal. I've heard the tiny terror can do more old school metal with a boost (there is a video on youtube showing this). You may be able to find second hand Laney's or Peavey's in that price range if your lucky.

+1 for the windsor. stick some new preamp tubes in there and set it clean with a couple of drive/distortion pedals:naughty:
that's what i did/do anyways....

Re: whats a good heavy metal amp

+1 for Randalls... you can find those old RG100ES things all over for about 150 to 200 if you look hard. Throw a OD on there or an EQ and you have a pretty sick (and kinda different in a good way) sounding Metal amp... cleans are not half bad if you can find one with the foot switch, and the vol 'can' clean up when you roll back... not great but usable. Newer Randalls are heavier and cheap, but not as cool!

Re: whats a good heavy metal amp

what style? its like asking what is a good rock amp. could be a fender twin to one of the uber metal ampz. Youll get responses across the board...

Read to original post and his username. He's looking for some heavy metal noise, so something with some juice and some gain. A Twin isn't gainy, but it sure is loud! :)

Re: whats a good heavy metal amp

Exactly what sort of metal are we talking here?

Sabbath/Deep Purple
Maiden/Priest
Dokken/Ratt
Metallica/Megadeth

What flavor of noise do you wish to make? And how loud?

+1 million on that one

the combos are biased a little differently than the heads so they run a little warmer (head runs way cold from the factory so this is a good thing). haven't spent a lot of time with with a combo (just head + cab) but for $500-$600 I'd get one in a heartbeat.

the 5150 will excel at just about any variety of modern metal and it can do some old school thrash (not like a modded JCM 800, but not too shabby)

Re: whats a good heavy metal amp

Dude, unless you are going WAYYY extreme metal, get a Peavey Windsor half stack and stick a Boss Super Overdrive in front of it.

Re: whats a good heavy metal amp

Do you have a cab to put an amphead into or will you need a combo? 5150s can sometimes be found for good prices. I got a 5150 II head for $450 used a while back.
