whats a good heavy metal amp

Re: whats a good heavy metal amp

im sure ill get hell for this, but a used Line 6 spider valve 1x12 is a monster! i run mine thru a H&k cab and its amazing. try it at your local gc and then get it on cl/ebay.

Actually those things do rip pretty hard, I find the crunch channel isn't too good for emulating a nice 800 type tone but the metal setting is pretty good at getting a nice chunky metal tone, and you get effects on board also which is always a plus

Re: whats a good heavy metal amp

Get a used 5150 and be done with it. It's a Peavey, so it's built to stand up to heavy gigging and it covers as much metal territory as you could possibly ask for. The Windsor sounds ****ing terrible - there is no way it's anywhere near the quality of the 5150, especially for metal. For the money, you get the best metal tone out of those things. You're not going to be able to replace it unless you spend atleast a grand more.

I'm a long time Marshall fanboy, and I'm still trying to get used to a 6505+. There's one at a local GC that I try out when I visit. It's quit different from Marshalls if that is what you are used to.

Re: whats a good heavy metal amp

Seems pretty self explanatory to me. Binnerscot clearly doesn't understand doom, and there's really no point in trying to explain it to him. Some dudes like it, some don't.

I don't know what all this talk of "doom" has to do with the OP's request...."whats a real nice heavy metal amp". Maybe you "doom" guys should save the playground rib jabbing for a more appropriate context.

I will also say that there are a couple of Peavey amps that will do the job really well and reliably. Peavey 5150s and you may even find a used a Triple X at a decent price. They are very under rated amps.

Neither do I, however SlowGroove has a bit of a tendency towards over-exuberance when it comes to spreading the gospel of Saint Vitus. The problem is that you insulted him with your comments about what he considers to be good doom tone, and I was hoping my comments would stave him off and get him to drop the subject.

If someone considers what I said an insult, let them be insulted....they earned it.

Re: whats a good heavy metal amp

Look for an old Randall amp. You'll have TONS of crunch and a lot of tight bottom end (and who doesn't like a tight bottom?). Having said that, though, you can play metal through a Fender Twin if you've got the right pedals.

Re: whats a good heavy metal amp

TBH with an Epi SG, a 50 DFX and an RP350 you´re not gonna be able to go that much up in the gear spectrum with 500 bucks....

IMO to get closer to the tones produced by the 25 1/2" scale alder Vs the first thing that needs to go in this setup is the guitar. Too many differences in spec to come close enough tonally without heavy processing, you can´t get an SG to sound like a Rhoads without a lot of work ;)

Re: whats a good heavy metal amp

huh? I remember Rhoads sounding very much Like Rhoads when he played his Gibby V and LP(24.75 scale same as SG) however he did not use a Digitech to get his distrotion, ditch the processor and get ya a decent distortion box
I recently sold a 30 watt marshall that had a decent SS dirty channel, but with the clean channel and a good dirt stomp box will do what you need, got reverb so maybe alittle chorus for cleans and your good to go.
If you must have a tube amp that does metal hunt the fleaBay I just scored a Peavey Ultra combo for $142 ...unbelievable
Concentrate on your playing dont get caught up in the effects and tube worship mumbo-jumbo remember they werent making gear designed to"do metal" when most metal bands crafted their sound. It came from players knowing what they wanted to sound like in their heads and working with what they had.
Peace
