What's a "normal" number of amps to own?

Re: What's a "normal" number of amps to own?

Optimally, one guitar amp and a stereo PA setup for all the other stuff (bass preamp, vocal effects, drum and keyboard amplification). The guitar amp will be a Mustang v so itll line out to the mixer as well. Everything in a rack for stereo sound.
Then..I'd have a pile of Carvins in the corner I'd look at every once in a while and maybe gently caress.

Wow! I had no idea.

All I've got is a Vox AD-120VT. And I was pretty satisfied with that, until I read this thread.

I wanted one of those....so badly. Then I heard the mustang V v2 stuff and played it a bit and decided I would never find the vox and gave up...
And then the local GC got an ad120vt with the big foot pedal for 349 and I walked away from it....
I dunno. I still feel weird about it.

That's a good price. It's a good, versatile amp. Nothing special compared to what these other guys are talking about. But, I had been satisfied with it. Until I read this thread, that is.

Re: What's a "normal" number of amps to own?

Let's see, I have three tube amps:

65DRRI (I really need to change the speaker, the Jensen is God awful)

A Bugera V5 for late night playing and as a portable grab-n-go amp.

and the Dwarvenaut (incoming cab, btw)

I also have 2 or 3 SS amps. One of which is this Ashdown that I use for when I need a really, really clean sound.

Now don't go getting green eyes from guys in this forum; some of them have big wallets and a few of them are professionals. There's a reason I wanted the AD; it's still whispered about in circles as a lot of tone for the price and well above most all current digital amps. The Mustang ended up winning my heart with respectable clean tones, usb I/o, full stereo loop and 75w a side.

Re: What's a "normal" number of amps to own?

What Jon said. The best amp is the one you can afford to play through. Do research, try examples, and choose what you feel is best.

Re: What's a "normal" number of amps to own?

My AC30 covers all the sounds I need. I'd like an Orange tho, and I'm GASing at the Ibanez TSA5TV.

Re: What's a "normal" number of amps to own?

Laney GH50L (paired with Zilla 2x12) for gigs.

Then for practice a Roland Cube 15 or the micro cube which I usually run clean using my boss gt6 for whatever sound I am after, though at the moment I cannot be bothered to set it all up so just using the cube tones.

Would like a small valve head or combo although there are a few things ahead of that in my queue of priorities!

I tried the Ibanez head through a Blackstar 1x12 and it didn't have any pop or balls. I spent awhile trying to dial in a tone and got nothing serviceable out of it. I was pretty disappointed seeing it could have been had for a great price.

I had the same experience. It just seemed anemic. I look at that amp as a really big TS9

Re: What's a "normal" number of amps to own?

For me, the ideal number of amps is: X-1 where X is the number that results in divorce. Obviously, solving for X is... a challenge.

As for the minimum acceptable number, I'd say 4: small, med, large and a backup.

A small battery powered combo for playing everywhere (beach, on lunch break, jams with acoustic players, busking, late night practice). I use a Vox Mini3.

A stout 1x12 with at least 30 watts for loud jams at home or out. I use a Yamaha Fifty 112 or a Peavey Valveking.

Something with a ton of headroom for band practice. I always like to have the power to blow out everyone in the room, even though I never use it. I just never like to be in the situation where I can't be heard and my tone sucks because I'm using an amp that doesn't have adequate power. I use a Peavey Special 130 that I've converted to a head and a Fender Ge412 cabinet. Or sometimes I use my Carvin Bel Air 50 watt 212 combo. Either sound great.

Then you need a backup for your high-headroom rig. As a backup I've a Marshall MOSFET Lead 100 and a 212 cab. This is a beast but currently needs deoxit badly... super scratchy pots.

If someone forced me at gunpoint to choose one amp, it'd be a 112 combo. Powerful yet somewhat portable.

If I was single I think my answer would be X+1 where X is the number I currently have!

Re: What's a "normal" number of amps to own?

I don't know about 'normal' but a minimum would be 2: one workhorse and a second back up for it.

Re: What's a "normal" number of amps to own?

I have 2 amps, peavey bandit 80watt ss And a peavey jsx/5150 cab. The js does everything i need and more so i dont really need another amp. I would like a series one blackstar but its not important in my journey.

I wouldn't mind getting me one of those Australian made VASE Amps.

Re: What's a "normal" number of amps to own?

Orange OR15 for jamming
Fender Champion 20 for late night practice and for learning new songs (aux in and headphone out, no one but me can hear my mistakes!)

Re: What's a "normal" number of amps to own?

The number of amps you need is directly proportional to both the number of different style bands you play in and how much money you have to spend on amps.

If I had my way, I'd have:

Mesa Lonestar Special
Mesa Mark V
64-65 Deluxe Reverb
5e3 Tweed Deluxe
6g3 Brown Deluxe
my new dream amp, a 41st Amplifiers Bayonet

and something for pedal steel, a Twin or a Super Twin or maybe a Milkman Pedal Steel amp. Or maybe my friends at 41st Amps could build me a pedal steel amp.

For those with GAS: more.

For those with spouses/significant others: less.

For those with the correctly chosen significant other or spouse: as many as you can reasonably afford.

Re: What's a "normal" number of amps to own?

Two Blackstar HT-5's, two Line6 ax2/212's, Carvin pb400, Carvin pb500, Marshall JVM410H full stack, Peavey block letter 5150 full stack, Blackstar Series One 104el34 half stack, Jet City JCA100HDM half stack, Marshall Valvestate 100v 8100, Eleven Rack, Line6 pocket pod. I'm probably not the right person to be asking this question to.

I've got three guitar amps, two valve/one 100 watts the other 60 watts and one SS around 60 watts.
When it comes to stereo amps I've got half a dozen or more, i"m not sure exactly.
