What's a "normal" number of amps to own?

Re: What's a "normal" number of amps to own?

Wow! I had no idea.

All I've got is a Vox AD-120VT. And I was pretty satisfied with that, until I read this thread.

You are satisfied with the Vox AD-120VT??!!

Man, you definitely need another amp. That is NOT a normal number of amps to own!

I know! I haven't felt this inadequate since I joined the High School football team as a freshman.

Re: What's a "normal" number of amps to own?

I have a practice amp and amp modelers, do they count?

I have 3 solid state bass amps

one tube guitar amp

more is betta! amps dont take up that much room, just put em against a wall.

if you have tube amps make sure to turn em on every two weeks for an hour! otherwise ya you have too many.

Re: What's a "normal" number of amps to own?

Ok since everyone else is doing it, here's my list from smallest to largest:
1. Fender EC Vibro Champ
2. 1973 Fender Champ
3. Mission 5E3 Deluxe (built myself from kit)
4. Fender Custom Vibrolux Reverb
5. Fender '59 Bassman LTD

All of my amps are equipped with Weber speakers.

Re: What's a "normal" number of amps to own?

I wouldn't say I have gas and fortunately I have a wife that understands..... or tolerates my addiction for all things related to guitar :).

I now own 30 guitars all very nice instruments. AND 6 amps.

The amps I have are:

Marshall 900 50W combo 2 12". I gigged a lot with this amp and it has never failed me. Very durable and has a great sound. And its pretty easy to move around. The only real negative to this amp is the effects loop. Ive had issues getting the effects to not suck all the tone, so I only use Chorus, Delay, OD and a Wah so it hasn't been an issue but a while back I was using some others. Now when I do use this I run the board straight in even though modulating effects are supposed to run straight through the loop but its working. Haven't gigged with this in a couple of years.

1968 Fender Super Reverb "drip edge" Needless to say the silver face Fenders of this early era are essentially a blackface amp. I don't run the volume too high on this.... maybe 4 to 5, then I use and OD to kick it a bit. Its a wonderful amp & I have had this amp easily for 15 to 20 years. I don't use it too much anymore because its a pain in the ass to move. Its just tall enough to make it awkward to carry in & out of clubs. But a great sounding amp.

1968 Deluxe Reverb "drip Edge" Arguably one of the best gigging amps for small clubs. I almost gave up on this amp. It had a click pot installed in the vibrato spot, so it was supposed to take the tube for the vibrato and run it into the power section, but IMHO it just made it sound muddy. I went through a variety of speaker changes and then I took it to my amp tech and he fixed the muddiness the amp had and I went back to an emminence speaker that gives me a great sound. With the volume on 4 to 4½ and with a Humbucking equipped guitar it breaks up beautifully. Backing off on the guitar a bit cleans it up and it is very touch sensitive. I use this amp mostly when I gig. My pedals are sparse as well, Chorus, Dleay, Overdrive(TS9) and a wah. So the TS9 kicks it just a bit.

Bogner Shiva 1 12" 80W 6L6 The drive on this amp is just beautiful I use it mostly for Drive, but honestly I have never gigged with it. The band I am playing with we do mostly blues and some blues-rock, so it could work great but most of the clubs are small and I like to be able to hear the band so the DR works for that. This amp is actually A/B'd with my Komet.

Komet 60 When I bought this amp it stopped my search for anything else. It is an amazingly beautiful sounding amp. The cleans are incredible and loaded with complex character. Harmonics just fly off the fingerboard. When I first got it I had it hooked up to a Peavey 4 12" with Shefield 1290's (I think). After speaking to Komet I wound selling the Peavey and replacing it with a Marshall 1960 AX loaded with greenbacks and it was like a whole new amp. The greenbacks are absolutely the right speaker for this amp. Its a pretty raw amp, with no effects loop or reverb to get in its way. Agai my board is sparse. I use a Verbzilla, Chorus, Delay, OD. Great amp and I don't think I will ever find something better. Yes it did cost a lot but IMHO it was worth every penny. Great Great amp!

Re: What's a "normal" number of amps to own?

OH. I have Acoustic amp also. I don't use it much, but its a Genz Benz Shenandoah 80W amp. I only have 3 acoustics that I can plug in. A MArtin D18 (Sigma), a MArtin D15, and a Alzarez YAri baritone acoustic which is a really cool guitar.

forum members told me this. they said turn on a tube amp and let it run on standby for an hour every two weeks. solid state amps do not need that.

I do not have amp repair type knowledge, but layman's knowledge: you need to use a car every so often to keep it running smoothly. so tube amps are like that. makes sense to me since my tube amp is worth more than my car!! ;)

Re: What's a "normal" number of amps to own?

I think whats more important is rolling all the pots or they can build up with carbon and become scratchy if not used.

thank you

does the amp need to be turned on when I do this? I assume I should roll the pots from "0" to "10" a few times each couple weeks.

I don't think that tube amps have oil that needs to be circulated throughout all of the friction producing parts. Unless that's the secret mojo in some amps.

Re: What's a "normal" number of amps to own?

My tube amp hangs out for years unused
The only trouble I have had was on moving it round I loosened a tube and cracked a solder joint . It was on at the time

The effects loop doesn't like for stuff to stay plugged in for years

The set screws on the knobs come loose once
Thought a spirit was playing with my amp
