What's A Used Tube Cheap On ebay

Re: What's A Used Tube Cheap On ebay

Probably not.

Going tube, 15-20 watts minimum... and you won't have much of a clean tone to speak of. Solid state... at least 80-100.

Maybe an old PV bandit? They're a staple of broke guitar players... sound halfway decent and can take a helluva beating...

If I get something in the 15-20 watt tube range I plan to take care of break up with AT7 tubes.

Switching to AT7's from AX7's will only take care of preamp krunch... does nothing for power amp krunch which is what you get when it's cranked. Well, that and speaker krunch...

This Crate VC50 I just picked up is pretty cool. 50 watts. All tube.

I know there is a 2x12 combo over on the Gear Page for sale. I was checking it out for a friend, but he's convinced he wants a stack.
It's not the best, but it's definitely in your price range. From my recent experience the VC50 is not a bad amp at all.

i still have a Crate VC5212 and it's an AMAZING amp for the price range! Good distortion channel, nice clean tone...great amp for the cash

For up to $250, you can get a LOT of great tube amps. Just takes looking around.

Do not settle for something bad. I spent less than $250 on both of my tube amps, which are just a notch under world class clean amps (although I spent $400 on each to get them overhauled - so it's kind of a wash :)).

Re: What's A Used Tube Cheap On ebay

I'm thinking once I have all my funds together I'm going to keep a lookout for a cheap Power Block or a cheap tube 15W. If I go with a tube 15W I can always mic it through the PA, and then at least I'll be miking an amp with good tone rather than a POS one.

Thanks for all the help, all suggestions have been taken into consideration and have been of good help.

Bi Gal, thanks, I'll keep that in mind not to settle on something decent. It kind of makes it a plus my band doesn't have any October gigs, so the only place I have to put up with my POS amp is practises (which is still annoying, but...).

Re: What's A Used Tube Cheap On ebay

I think a 5 watt head could do okay through a 4x12, you're just gonna have to get used to switching your pickups and riding your volume knob to clean it up.

I used to jam with a friend of mine, me using my Bassman and a 4x12 and him using a Valve Junior and a 4x12...The Valve Jr. cranked got great bluesy / rock crunch (think Zeppelin) and was as loud as my Bassman on 4, just before it starts breaking up. Since you're not gonna be competing with another guitarist on stage, you should be able to get by just fine....plus most clubs make you mic thru the PA even if you roll up with a 100-watt Marshall.

Go for Traynor. Made in Ontario, highly regarded worldwide, all-tube, built like a brick, 2-year transferable 'even if you break it' warranty (basically drop it down a flight of stairs and if it doesn't work they will handle it), master volume, real spring reverb, has some bias technology that allows it to take many different tubes without needing to be biased, great tone. The 50-watt YCV50 blue's go for around $800 canadian new and I think you can find them for half that used. I've got a 15 watt Traynor and it's really loud so I think the 50 would be a good fit especially if you got one of the extension cabs. If I were you I'd save for awhile longer and look for something in the $400-$500 range, something that's good instead of 'meh'.
