Whats more versatile a JB or Dimarzio DP100?

Re: Whats more versatile a JB or Dimarzio DP100?

I think they are both very versatile pickups. My experience, in all fairness, with the JB is very limited and the tones I've heard on YouTube and various recordings is in sharp contrast to my personal experiences, so disregard my opinion as such.

I mean the roster of Super D players aren't just rock and metal guys... you have Jerry Garcia and Al DiMeola as famous users too. Through a Fender Twin, for example, the Super D is very pretty and balanced with just a bit of lower-mid bump. Both pickups were made to replace stock Les Paul pickups and were made to overdrive amps in the early 70's. Plus, if legend has it, the JB is named after a certain Jeff Beck, who is certainly anything but a one trick pony. ;)

Seymour developed the JB for Jeff when he was working in England...Jeff's old Tele that he use on all the Yardbirds stuff with Vox AC30's worked well, but Beck wanted the guitar to have more output to run his 50 watt Marshall...There were no master volumes amps then........so, Seymour wound these very hot pickups and I believe also installed them in Jeff's Tele.......
I had a bolt neck Valley arts Tele that had a JB in it and it sounded pretty good...In every other guitar they always sound wrong/shrill/to many high mids....just my opinion

I can only speak on behalf of the applications I've used them both for and that has been under High Gain for Heavy Metal. I now own two USA Jackson Soloists and one is equipped with the JB and the other the SD.

The JB sounds chunkier on the wound strings. The SD bassier. I find the JB's distortion and punch more appealing. The SD's bass overrides the distortion characteristic too much for me to find it useful in this regard. The JB wins for me.

One the unwound strings, the JB cuts through something fierce. Th SD has a nice sound on these strings as well. I think they both pass the test just at varying degrees.

Clean sounds are nice for both. But, I prefer the JB overall for ear-splitting Heavy Metal.

Not a very versatile review, but I'm also not a jack-of-all-trades guitarist either. ;)

Which would sound better in the bridge position on an Epiphone 58 flying v? For the bluesy based hard classic rock sound?

I cannot speak from experience as I never used the DiMarzio DP100. Presonally, I think the JB is an awesome pickup and would say it is very versatile because it definitely cuts through any mix from my experiences. I was able to use it both clean and dirty, quiet and loud, gentle and hard attack...but some hate the pickup so its a personal thing for usage–versatile to some while useless to others.
